Scotland 2017 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Corris Grey

Earlier cars (like my 2004) had a more textured leather on the wheel, later ones (like my 2012) smooth, IMHO the earlier finish was preferable, but presumably the change was to make it more "luxury". Only Range Rovers since 1988

The steering wheel is supposed to have a matt, very slightly textured, finish.

It is shiny because the surface is worn out to a smooth finish.

No, the steering wheel goes shiny because of all the grease and dead skin ingrained in it, get that layer off and it will be factory fresh again, if there is a grain you will start to see it once more too.

Disgusting but true, same with seats. Thumbs Up

Modern leathers are actually painted/plastic covered leather, therefore once the paint/plastic layer is worn out you get to the actual leather layer and it gets shiny from grease indeed. If your steering wheel was grained when new and is now smooth and shiny it is because the plastic layer is gone and grease gets in the leather.
