Annoyed...

I noticed on the rear offside passenger door that the lacquer was peeling at the point where it meets the wheelarch. On closer inspection, there appears to be a masking line down the door where it's overlapped by the front drivers door, suggesting it's been repainted Sad This morning, when I looked closely at the drivers door, there is a tiny spec of overspray on the rubber seal around the handle Evil or Very Mad

I'm quite anal about cars and have always tried to find an unmarked example when buying, having had a bad experience with a BMW a few years ago.

I'm more annoyed at myself for not spotting this when I bought it, as I could have made the decision to proceed or walk away.

The thing is, there are no DA/rubbing down marks in the paint, which is a normal sign of a repaint. The paintwork matches the rest of the car and even when viewed close up, I cannot see any flatting marks in the paint. I've worked in the motor trade and I've always been able to tell a repaint. This could just be a case of the door being re-lacquered - I'm not sure. The door panels are perfectly flat, so there's no filler in them.

It's not a new repair - it looks like it's been done a few years. I'm more worried about the lacquer peeling off.
I'm not sure I want to keep the car now - I feel a bit let down. I appreciate it's a 7 yr old car and it's not going to be prefect, but still.

I don't know where my obsession with originality stems from either- I can remember having cars when I was younger and not being bothered about repairs.

Anyone else had their RR repaired and what are your thoughts?

Noddy,

My 1st car was a LandRover 1979 vintage and was more repairs than original! I am more concerned about originality now too but look at it in context, it's not like you found weld seams on the chassis, bodywork can get marked/scuffed/scratched anywhere and it sounds like the repair was fairly good as you only just spotted it.

I had a Lexus IS200 Sport that I bought off a friend's business. I'd test driven loads of them from Dealers so knew what I was getting. This car was jinxed, something just not right about it, handled badly etc but I thought it was all 100% original and fine. Then it just went sideways one day on the motorway for no reason and I stoved it into the armco. It needed £3k of repairs to fix so I sold it as I lost confidence in it. That was an extreme case.

I would not worry about yours, like you say, its not been filled or flatted, it looks fine. You've not had it long enough to know if you truly want to keep it so I'd suggest living with it for 6 months and see how you feel then.

Chill, I'm sure it's fine! Very Happy Discovery 4 HSE

I think it's because it's our new car and I'm focussing too much on it. My irrational obsession with perfection doesn't help either!
Like you say- it's not a cut & shut etc and it is a lovely car to drive.
I just drove past an 07 plate mondeo ST in dark silver and I could see the rear door was a different shade of silver to the rest of the car. That was in daylight from a distance too Shocked

relax, even new vehicles are repaired and resprayed in the factory.

Had a trip round the LR production line, saw new vehicles with panel damage being pulled off and sent to a special area for dents to be knocked out and resprayed! Panels get knocked and scratched in the production process.

I have even had a few NEW LR vehicles that needed a spray as the paint was peeling.

I wouldn't worry too much, yours could have even been done in the factory

I remember having a BMW repaired once as it was hit by another driver. I took it to the local BMW dealers, who had their own on-site bodyshop with BMW approved facilities like you'd expect.

The guy in the bodyshop reception told me that they very often repair brand new BMW's that have been damaged on the transporter. Worse still, they don't even have to tell the customer that his new pride and joy has been repaired!

have heard the same from a friend who was a salesman @ a LR Dealership. Quite a few cars delivered damaged and also the wrong spec, such as (you'll not believe this but apparently true) panels being different colours! Discovery 4 HSE
