100000+ miles

What things do I need to look out for on a 100000+ mile 4.4 or 4.2sc. All advice appreciated

Clearly the older the car / higher the mileage, the more regular servicing and maintenance matter.

Ideally you’d want to see things like all fluids changed at around 60k - diffs, gearbox etc.

I usually look for little things - my starting point is 4 matching tyres from a mainstream brand - it’s an easy check and skimping on tyres means there will be corners cut elsewhere - and not something a quick valet will cover up.

IMHO it’s better

As soon as mine are out of warranty I take them to my local guy who I trust 100% and does everything top quality

Main dealers are (in my experience) box checkers who don’t know that much - the service manager may be good, but the grunt trainee doing the service work is next to useless.

As long as the right fluids are used, then I’m happy - plus other things like genuine OE brake pads, but they don’t need a main dealer to fit them.

That's what I was thinking, I'm not sure if there is a good independent in Birmingham but I will do my home work, in only 10days away from having the readys to get my 4.4 or 4.2sc, then the lpg fitted Thumbs Up

Read the LPG threads as well then.

The BMW 4.4 seems bullet proof. The Jag 4.4 or 4.2sc seem to require a better quality conversion - I say that from casual acquired knowledge, never having had, or even been interested in LPG.

What year did the jag 4.4 start? I've read the lpg forum it's good, I've got a holiday home in mid wales so a lot of miles will be clocked up hence the lpg and th v8 rumble Thumbs Up

I think late 2006 - it came with the facelift as Ford had bought Jag & LR and so replaced the BMW bits where they could.

The Jag 4.4 petrol is pretty rare though.

I use the channel tunnel regularly so LPG is a non-starter for me.

I had a BMW engined 4.4 many years ago and loved it.

The TD6 diesel at the time sucked IMHO - however, things changed with the TDV8 and I’ve been a fan (and owner) ever since.

If u look at the what’s your mileage thread, you’ll see a lot of the top 10 or 20 are 4.4 petrol and a lot have lpg.

The only thing that might catch you out is the chain guides. This can cost £2-3k. If it’s been done then you are on a winner.

Ouch! Could you have that same problem with a 4.2sc or is it just the 4.4 that has the chain guide problem?
