P400E question

I wonder if any P400E owners could help me with a question.

My Range Rover has two principle uses. Short local journeys, 5-20 miles, and then long journeys down to the Algarve via Portsmouth/Santander. Clearly a P400E would be great for the former, but I am trying to gauge what the fuel economy might be in a reasonably steady 120 km/h cruise to the latter?

On our recent trip to the Algarve my SDV8 only averaged 28mpg. Would a P400E do better or worse than this?

I have very similar use - loads of short runs at the weekend and 10-12 hour drives to France 3-4 times a year.

I've just checked the excellent app, and the answer to your question about mpg on those super long journeys is around 25mpg. This was with a fully loaded car and two adults / two children. An 80 mile journey in the UK gets me around 38mpg and that's starting with a fully charged battery.

It makes sense to me - from memory I didn't get much more mpg in my previous V8 diesel L405, but I used to use a lot of diesel on the local weekend journeys. 2024 Range Rover P550e AB

Unnecessary quote removed

This is really helpful and makes sense to me to. I’d like to move away from diesel if possible but without compromising fuel consumption - so no 5.0 S/C. This suggests overall I am likely to get better overall consumption in a P400e than I do in the SDV8 across my range of journeys, but at a lower cost whilst the pump price differential remains in favour of petrol. So this sounds like the direction I will take.

Unless you’re doing an awful lot of miles, the difference in fuel cost isn’t that relevant in the overall cost of ownership. How often you have to stand in a petrol station is probably the more relevant concern.

Re: P400E question

Averaging 115kph (71mph) on a 346km (215 mile) motorway journey - with little-to-no battery charge at the outset - I achieved 25.8mpg.

Averaging 76kph (47mph) on a 209km (130 mile) journey - with a full battery charge - the economy increases to 38.6 mpg.

So I imagine your long cruise would be around 25mpg.

My current daily commute is around 20 miles each way. With charging at home and outside my office, I use no petrol whatsoever (“250mpg”) - which is where the P400e really comes into its own.

I borrowed a P400e RRS for the weekend a few months ago. I drove it to Devon and back laden with dog, guns, ammo and other shooting kit. I got 24.5mpg for the 250 mile journey back, starting with an empty battery, which was mainly spent in the upper end of the normal range of motorway speeds. That is about what I get from my SDV8 (well ok, a bit less - probably I get 28mpg from the diesel).

If you have programmed the satnav (and start with a battery charge) the car will try to eek the battery use out so that it runs out as you arrive at the destination. However, I don't think that really makes much difference over big distances (in crude terms, the 25 mile battery range would make a 10% improvement over the 250 mile journey).

As A.C. says, it is all the zero petrol journeys that add up. Like you, 90% of my journeys are under 20 miles. The balance are 200+ milers. So I'm very happy that I'm going to average something quite impressive and I can live with the 10%-case long journeys being below what a diesel can deliver. I was sold.

I am picking my p400e up in a few days.

Short journeys are leccy only, so infinity MPG, and feels particularly good if you are recharging from solar panels at home!

Medium journeys in hybrid mode can be a satisfying 50+mpg, and the shift between electric, electric/petrol and petrol-only are almost unnoticeable

Long journeys like the one described are petrol only and will av 28-30mpg

My VSE phev has just had the 16k service and the economy seems to be getting better still with more miles on the clock. Daily commute is 42 miles each way with a full battery at the start of each journey. Mix of dual and single carriageway plus a bit of urban with an average speed of 40mph over the journey, makes a comfortable 60mpg over the distance and regularly 70mpg which still amazes me. Agree with others that flat battery and 70 ish on a motorway equals high 20s mpg.

Just back from the Alps and the 700 miles each way there and back I averaged 24mpg. I do like to get a move on along the Autoroutes so cruising at 88mph and also surprising people at the Peage with some serious acceleration from the barrier!

Wafting about in the resort, electric only (as mentioned above) equalled infinity MPG.

Most impressive car I have ever owned.
