2012 4.4 tdv8 Restricted performance

Hi folks I have a 2012 4.4 tdv8 that keeps going into restricted performance mode. If I switch off for 5mins everything returns to normal . It happens when I have to sit in traffic with the engine ticking over . The fault code reader says turbo/supercharger solenoid curcuit B low intermittent. Does anyone know is it an electrical solenoid or vaccuum unit?

Hi Marglen,

Can I ask which code reader you have and the code numbers if possible.? Is it a red or yellow restricted triangle?

There's lots on here about various bits that may give a fault in that area, from MAP sensors to T/C linkages. Hoses from the donut are also suspect too. Also lots of folks with much more insight than me, so I would expect a lot of help is incoming. Thumbs Up Cheers

The code reader is an Autel MD802 all systems I have reset all drivetrain faults and left the car ticking over on my driveway for 5 mins then gone up the road and the restricted performance comes back . Checked the faults again and the only two that returned referred to the B side turbo boost solenoid. The restricted performance light is the red one. If I start the car and drive off immediately I can drive all day no problem. The fault only occurs when it is left ticking over for more than 4or 5 minutes

I'm sorry but I'm not yet familiar enough with the fault you describe, YET....

There are various linkages on the turbos which you can observe whilst the car is started and allowed to idle and there is the change over valve buried at the bottom front nearside of the engine which is vacuum operated, I think. These have been known to sieze or stick. It may also be relevant that the codes for the ECM seem to start with P, along the lines

P004A-13
Turbocharger/Supercharger
Boost Control B Circuit /
Open - Circuit open
Turbine intake
solenoid (TSOV) circuit
open circuit
Turbine intake
solenoid (TSOV) failure
NOTE: Using the manufacturer approved
diagnostic system perform the Turbo, EGR and air path
dynamic test routine
Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check
the turbine intake solenoid (TSOV) circuit for
open circuit
Check and install a new turbine intake solenoid
(TSOV) as required. Refer to the Warranty Policy
and Procedures manual, or determine if any
prior approval programme is in operation, prior
to the installation of a new module/component

If you have the code it may help others more knowledgeable to assist. I'll try to read up a little further on the info you've given, but please don't hold your breath. Apologies Sad Cheers
Richard

When the turbo change over valve sticks (or seizes) the car runs fine at low revs, it is only when the engine revs near 2500 rpm and the 2nd turbo can’t operate that the car trips into restricted performance mode.
It does raise a Fault code, but sorry I don’t know it.

Hello again everyone. I am still confused by this fault. I can now make it happen. If I reset all drive train faults and start the car and drive off immediately I can drive all day (did this yesterday) and have no problems. I checked the fault codes this morning and all was clear . I then started the car and left it ticking over for 5 minutes and as soon as I set of afterwards the restricted performance came on. I returned home and checked the fault codes again and the following codes came up.

P004B-71. Turbocharger boost control solenoid B - circuit range/ performance
P004D-77. Turbo/ supercharger boost control solenoid B-circuit high

The thing that confuses me is why should the B Turbo throw up problems on tick over.

If I switch of the engine without resetting the codes and leave it 2-3 minutes I can restart and drive off and have no further problems until for example I get stuck in traffic and the engine ticks over for a while then as soon as the traffic clears restricted performance comes in again.
Any ideas appreciated
Mark

Sorry Mark, but I am equally baffled, but if it were mine, I would clear all Fault codes and take it for a really good blast.
M6 to the top of Shap or similar, keeping it in 5th or 6th to keep the revs up.
If it pulls 3000rpm without tripping , then you know the 2nd turbo is opening up correctly.

Also , for no other reason than elimination, carefully check the four short plenum hoses for splits near the jubilee clips.

I was thinking the same as Mike...check all 4 hoses. Originals are a weak point. Most have been upgraded....see my gallery for the upgraded versions Thumbs Up 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Hi yes, I have after much frustration. I found it by accident when I was carrying out a service and had the engine sound cover off. The engine was ticking over and I noticed that two of the vacuum hoses in the immediate vicinity of the vac pump were collapsed so I switched off and examined them and they had gone soft. I replaced them all and since then the problem has gone. I assume that when the engine was ticking over not enough vacuum was getting through the restriction thus setting up weird fault codes. At higher engine speeds enough vacuum got through to operate things.

Do the hoses you found collapsed go around the front left engine cover strut? Two of mine look collapsed as they go around the strut.

Thanks for the picture. My concern was the two pipes that are more or less touching the engine cover post directly below the wiring loom. The rubber connector on the end of those pipes are all 'sucked in' on mine if that makes sense.
