It is the manual release for the boot so you can open it from inside should the button or electricity fail. |

Ease it out and it manually releases the upper tailgate.

So the black bit with a cord attached - is there any problem using that all the time (10-15 times a year realistically)? Saves me retrofitting a button then! Current stable:

the OP mentioned 7 seat conversion, so I'm assuming its so the rear passengers can escape. |

I think that's a very good point NMJ, wasn't considering opening it as a passenger in the back.

I wouldn't tell the 6th and 7th passengers about that release pull (likely to be young and risk free) - not good to have them opening it on the motorway |
