Tailgate struts

Hi all

I have a question about tailgate struts.

When I close the tail gate on my car I pull the top tailgate down until it is around 4” from the bottom section and then let it drop.

Should I have to push it all the way down? If the top section free falls closed does this mean that the struts are worn and need replacing?

The gas struts go 'over centre' so, yes, you should expect the tailgate to behave that way..
