Dash cam recommendation

Just after a heads up on this. Don’t want to spend fortunes but need to sort one with all the idiots on the roads nowadays. Had an issue before last Xmas while in my van and if i’d Have had a dash cam it would of been a clean cut case in my favour.

Also I suppose I need to add. I haven’t a clue how they work. I’m guessing they record on a loop all the time they’re on?

Next base 412 from Halfords. Has a little battery inside it for parking mode so will record any vehicle movements. Bluetooth to an App to set it up. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

I would avoid anything with Nexbase on it.

We have 4 various models in my immediate family & my next door neighbours have 2 - every single one keeps giving a variation of "no card error", "hangs" (not recording) and the battery duration abysmal.

When contacted at various time Nextbase were about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

I’ve had a look at the reviews for the nexbase and they’re not good to be honest. Although it only seems the sensor thing when parked up is the issue. not Sure if I would even use that.

I've got Nextbase 512 GW's in two vehicles and both have been trouble free. I initially had an issue with with card errors but it soon became clear I'd bought fake SD cards--theres alot about. Bought high quality replacements from a reputable source and all was fine. No hanging or other issues and just leave them to do their job. In the RR I have front and rear cameras. The rear camera shows as a picture in picture if required. Fitting a rear camera as well does reduce the quality, but it's still very good. Parking mode works fine, although as said, internal battery life isn't fantastic.

To add to my comments the SD cards are all reputable makes bought from reputable sources. We have tried rotating the cards to no avail. The cards work fine in other devices so it cannot be the cards at fault. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

My original SD cards worked ok in other devices too, however there are different classes and speed of card. I replaced with U3 speed Nextbase cards and have had no issues since.

Company called Dash Witness based in Faringdon but will fit products anywhere I believe, installed my front and rear Blackvue cameras. I also have the Power Magic pro hardwired in for parking mode. Very good kit and company, talk to Emmett or Eric.

The cameras come with a 32Gb card but I would up that to 64Gb or larger. All LR cars from 1984

I appreciate what you are saying but all the cards in use are to Nextbase's spec's.

The situation may just be tenable if Nextbase Customer Service knew what the word "service" actually meant. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

Perhaps buy one high end card and see how you get on. I believe the minimum requirement is Class 10, but ideally U3. What class are you using at present ?

Not too sure exactly what they are except that they are all to at least NB's spec's.
Just can't be bothered with them now. They will all be replaced at some point.
& to think that we all thought we were buying a premium product.
I appreciate your help - you have been far more helpful than NB themselves. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

I’ve fitted a few of these to my cars and they work a treat. Buy a decent SD card though.

As a comparison I have a top-end Blackview professionally fitted in my RR but don’t rate it above one of these, which I’ve recently fitted (front and back) to a new M5 Competition. MY23 D350 HSE

I bought one of these -

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Z-Edge-Recording-...amp;sr=8-4

The pictures are excellent, easy to set up, but... I've had 2 episodes at least where the camera failed to record, including some serious incidents which I had reported to the Police. I researched this and it appears to be a very common problem of SD card read/write failure, because dash cams are very hard on memory cards. The incessant read/write cycle can damage cards relatively quickly, so I took the plunge and bought a Transcend "Durable" card which is specifically aimed at dash cams. I only got it last week, so too early to report on any improvement, but it is certainly worth thinking about.

One convenience feature I would look for (which mine doesn't have) is wi-fi or BT download of video to your mobile, to save having to pull the SD card out of the camera and load onto a computer to view.
