Female Tennis - Am I missing something?

Right, this is a genuine question as I enjoy watching women's tennis. I was watching an interview with Serena Williams the other day and she was talking about the sport offering the same prize money to women as they are equal. SO, why don't they play best of 5 sets?? No-one seems to be able to give me a definitive answer. Hopefully one of you clued up individuals can help Very Happy

I'm with you rosco, women are demanding equal pay in cycling, but do less than half the miles.

Maybe the answer is equal pay per set or point played, in cycling per mile/km raced. Remember:- amateurs built the ark
Proffesionals built the titanic

IMHO until it’s a mixed competition then nothing is equal.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't pay them the same?

It's not a matter of women refusing to play longer tournaments, it's the tournaments themselves that don't want longer games, hence why almost all men's tournaments are now best of 3 sets too. It's only 4 or 5 tournaments all year where men play any more than women.

So why should the players suffer when a couple of old dinosaur tournaments refuse to reduce the lengths of men's matches for no real reason, and refuse to lengthen women's games, what other options are there?

As I say, it's not an issue in about 95% of tournaments anyway as they all play best of 3 now

No worries, it's a fair question. It's one of those things where in the few tournaments a year where it's still different, it does seem daft!

I would imagine its viewing figures. I've never had a problem with anyone , sportsmen or otherwise earning incredible money if people are prepared to pay them. If the womens matches bring in the same viewing figures as the mens then all should be paid equally. Obviously if the pay was spread out on skill level then the top men would easily earn more than the women due to nature's design of the different anatomy between the sexes. 2015 4.4 AB

I guess the problem with that is that you don't know in advance what those numbers would look like. Historically I'm sure the men have outstripped the womens viewing figures whoever played. Nowadays though, Serena v Venus in the final will absolutely bring in more than a game like Anderson v Cilic (both finalists from the last couple of years). All in all I think the gap has closed significantly, and if the men's game is reliant on 3 or 4 players to bring the numbers, there's no real reason to pay them differently

Biggest problem isn't the money. It's the bloody awful high pitched screaming accompanying every shot. Evil or Very Mad John
