One of my sidesteps has become loose due to what looks like a fixing bolt shearing off with corrosion against the chassis.I think they have always had slight play in em, I was considering mig welding onto the chassis once to cure it.
I'm tempted to just take em off to be honest, always look a bit grubby, do you folks think they REALLY serve any purpose, I can get in and out easily without stepping on em. With the weight saving I might get 40mpg too!  2008 L322 Vogue 3.6 TDV8 in Java Black with parchment and Navy interior. 125000mls.

Short legs here too and wouldn’t be without them. Great if you’re anywhere with muddy gateways too, as it makes it much easier to step in and out avoiding the worst of the mud. Great at keeping the sides clean too. And for helping to stop car door dings if you leave the suspension up

And... if you’ve got roof rails, the passenger can ride on the outside if the car to get clear of the sheep poo and on to long wet grass before getting back in What is it about sheep poo and gates?!

I'm into my 3rd month of ownership & my L322 did not have them when I bought it.
My wife, who is disable & not very tall anyway finds it a bit of a climb so I suggested side steps & pointed some out to her & she said "no way, they look too JK** and we don't live in Essex".
So, to help her I have one of those little fold up steppystools & drop the suspension down.

Personally, I don't like the look of them on the L322 but, to me, they look fine on the Sport & later Discoveries.

No steps for us - my wife is 5’3”

She did her back in a few weeks ago, so I switched the deployable back on, which were actually quite handy, but I still kept forgetting about them and clouting myself in the back of my right calf as I get out too quickly.

Fortunately she’s feeling better now, so they are turned back off.

Side steps for me. Means there is less chance of the seat and switch panel being damaged. Also makes it easier to get in especially.

Oh and, unlike a lot of people, I actually like the look with mudflaps.  John

I've never liked the look of them, but as a tall man with a tall wife I have the luxury of choosing. I certainly wouldn't struggle in and out if I was a little shorter

They look better without either! If you need steps get deployable ones that don't ruin the lines...

Im 6'3" and i use my deployable simply to stop wear on the seat edge

Fixed side steps all the way

1. Preserve the wear on your driver's seat bolster and plastic surround
2. Ease of access for all passengers and driver (even if most passengers always use the wrong foot first!)
3. Seized / sheared mounting bolts can be drilled out and re-tapped
4. Deplorable side steps - far to many issues on forum to consider as an option
5. Does depend on amount of and type of off roading, steps and flaps a no no if "serious"

Would be happy if there was a Defender type fold down step available .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

I think that the side steps soften the appearance too much.

I think deployables are the best compromise. I had fixed steps when I bought mine, but the mountings crumbled and they always looked a bit scruffy anyway, so I took the opportunity to put deployables on. They tuck away nicely and they certainly reduce seat wear. 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Deployable for me, we love them and they don't spoil the looks when retracted.

Are deployable steps difficult to fit as an afterthought, wiring, switches, sensors etc? Are 2nd hand ones a viable consideration, should imagine new are ££££, s  2008 L322 Vogue 3.6 TDV8 in Java Black with parchment and Navy interior. 125000mls.
