TD6 gearbox oil filler plug

Hi all

Where can I pick up a new gearbox oil filler plug for my TD6?

Land Rover tells me that it is discontinued and I can’t find one on EBay?

It was £10 from Duckworths when I bought one @ 8 years ago

The filler plug has a special degradable metal on the nut end that falls apart and shreds as soon as you try to undo it Twisted Evil Must cost the earth to get that right Laughing

When removing, make sure you have your knackered nut undoers available. Oh, you won't get a socket bar on the end of your socket either because the propshaft is in the way. Best tool a six sided hex ring spanner and a hide hammer. .

Ah yes! The special degradable 17mm head. I experienced this today when I dropped the oil out of the box for a quick change.

I actually broke one of my own rules as, back in April I had changed the oil in the box and had quite happily undone the filler plug with no problems. Today, knowing full well that I had undone the filler plug a few months ago, I drained the oil before undoing the filler plug 😱

Well, you can all guess what happened next. After rounding off the head I ended up undoing it with a pair of pipe wrenches. I phoned my local Land Rover dealership who informed me that the plug was a discontinued item.

Surely there is another filler plug that will fit that is cheaper than £20?

Jim
