Best tyre for muddy fields & road - Cooper Zeon LTZ?

I have a 2007 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Petrol - I'm looking for a good tyre that will get me across clay soil waterlogged fields in winter months but will still be good for road use throughout the year.

Please can anyone advise me on a good tyre for the job?

I'm still running on the original alloys, with 255/55/R19 Pirelli Scorpion Tyres

A recent visitor in a Discovery recommended I buy a set of Cooper Zeon LTZ 255/55R19 tyres - Has anyone else had a good experience with these?

Would also like to hear from others and their recommendations - Please let me know your thoughts?

Many thanks

General Grabber AT3 - Superb on and off road. No noisier than standard tyers either. Thumbs Up 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

+1 for Grabber AT3, I’m surprised how quiet they are on road and not much over £100 each

Goodyear Duratrac 255/55R19 is the LR homologated all terrain tyre for the 322, though speed rating is lower than the AT3. I had them on my 322 as my winter tyre and was happy with them. I now have the 255/55R20 version on my 405 as my winter tyre and again am happy, though the speed rating there is even lower. They are a bit noisier and use a bit more fuel, handling and braking less good on road than the Pirelli Sc Verde summer tyres, but OK for me. They have been fine on snow and ice, and on farm tracks and fields, bearing in mind of course that "ye cannae change the laws of physics" - I have known quads, tractors and even an Argocat get stuck. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Firstly, thank you everybody for sharing your thoughts, it's always much appreciated.

As the thread evolved I had pretty much decided on the Grabber AT3, especially when looking at the difference in cost. However, now stu_007 has come back with a supplier selling Cooper Zeons at £120 per tyre, I'm now torn between the two.

Also, I note CS's reference to the Goodyear Duratrac and a slight increase in road noise - Should this increase in road noise be expected with all tyres of this type, including the Cooper Zeons and Grabber ATS?

If so, I'm wondering whether to change the tyres at all, as the V8 Petrol L322 I have does have a supremely quiet cabin with the Pirelli Scorpions on. My reasons for looking to change tyres is only to get me across 12 acres of grass fields to feed our half a dozen sheep when the weather turns - If I didn't change would my Pirelli's with 6mm tread on manage that?

Worth a try, they do all the LR Experience on road tyres don't they ?

Mine coped admirably on snow and ice with Nexen road tyres - before I got General Grabbers Wink .

Every tyre is a compromise.

Much will depend on the weather and whether your field is flat, is consistent in its firmness (or lack of it) or has boggy patches. Road Scorpions will start spinning sooner than Duratracs, and the tread fills up more easily with mud, and once that has happened they are like slicks. The Duratracs will cut through better, but will cause more damage to the field in doing so, you can easily get deep ruts, maybe less so if you can be bothered to deflate them a bit and then pump them up again once back on the road. Once fields get so soft that I'm cutting through the turf I tend to walk, as it's not fair on the farmer to destroy the surface. That does of course make for much more carrying and time being required.

I would not especially like to run Duratracs all year, so have two sets of wheels with summer and winter tyres. If you want to run the same tyres all year and just have one set, and you like the Scorpions you have, then if I were you I'd stick with those and see how you get on. Most of the time if it is not especially boggy they will be OK. If it gets extremely soft the Duratracs would either make a real mess or you'd get stuck. So the Duratracs will have a relatively small window when they will get there but the Scorpions won't, and it is a case of deciding whether the year round compromise is worth it for that small number of occasions. They are of course much better in wintry weather than the standard summer Scorpions, depending on the weather you normally get they may be worth having for that alone. What I tried to do was to establish a secure and waterproof feed depot near where it would be used, feed off the vehicle if it was possible to drive, but have the feed there if I needed to walk. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Pirelli AT+ are made in 255/55R19. I have them in 275/55R20 on my 2012 and am impressed with their quietness and all-round good performance on and off sealed surfaces. I'm a farmer with a 2km driveway so they need to handle muddy tracks well enough without chewing-up the ground unnecessarily.

Thank you once again to all for you comments and sharing your experiences with regards to this topic. I think I'm going to try the Pirelli AT+ as recommended by GraemeS.

It appears to be "the new kid on the block" recently developed by Pirelli with an emphasis on low road noise as well as off road capability and the coveted three peak snowflake sidewall marking for improved traction in the snow.

I will let you all know how I get on once fitted - a detailed review for anyone interested is here:

The AT+ is becoming quite popular here in Oz, including the (non-LT) 255/55R19 size that also fits the Amarok which is also popular.
