Locking wheel nuts !

So new tyres arrive at tyre depot, had the car 6 weeks and all ok so far but the tyres were poor, plenty of tread but some fairly significant cracks and gouges on every corner so purchase price was negotiated to accommodate new boots.

Then this morning came the realisation, I can't find the locking wheel nut! So a divert to Guy Salmon who to their credit bought out a large box of these things and literally the last one in the box was the correct one for my vehicle. Thank god they had this one in stock.

I wonder if these things are as necessary these days, do thieves still steal wheels? Especially from a 10 year old car.

I think many disco3 & 4 (and older range rover sport) owners would like locking wheel nuts on their spares as they go walks all the time (and cost to replace is often the cost of the wheel, tyre and new winch). Current: RR L322 2010
Past: RR L405 2017, RR L322 2012, 2008 & 2004, 2018 D5, 2016 Defender, 2011 D4, a few Disco2s, P38, RR Classic, couple of Disco1's, SIII SWB

Yes slightly different on the Discos and I ended up buying a heavy steel disc thing (uncle Ray on the D3 forum) to prevent theft of spare when i had D3s. But on the FullFat spare is safe but just wondered how safe are the other 4 corners?

I'll stick with the locking nuts on her now for sure as I can now get them off.

the FF is a big heavy car to jack up...many owners have problems so the opportunist thief will probably not have the equipment ..

Always ditched mine. They rust and round off Censored
Also go round and check the normal nuts aren’t swollen. The plastic shiny caps hide rust underneath Censored

As Dr Rob - locking nuts replaced with standard, tyre suppliers recommended this as they see too many lock nuts seized and they are apparently a real hassle to remove if that happens. Over tightening can be a problem too. Agreed also that you need to watch for swelling, if it happens the standard socket won't fit. On my 322 the nuts were replaced under warranty due to swelling. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I think I'll leave them now, given they seemed fine for the tyre change yesterday and having invested a chunk of cash for the new Pirelli Scorpion Zero all season option, I'd hate for some light fingered little Censored to remove them too easily. I'm hoping that tyres are done for a while now! RR Vogue TDV8 Grey/Black

Did you also have a 4 wheel laser alignment done with suspension fixed into tight tolerance mode using a plug in?

Hmm Dr Rob, I had 4 wheel alignment done, not sure about the later part. I've a decent run coming up next week, so was going to see how she felt at motorway speeds and some poor tracks etc.

I might call tyre people and find out if they used a plug in, they certainly used laser tracking device of some description. RR Vogue TDV8 Grey/Black

Without locking the suspension it will simply fight itself when they adjust the rods etc.
If they say they left a door or boot open then big alarm bells. Codswollop. Needs a plug in. The GAP IID Bluetooth can do it and is another reason all owners should have one for these modern beasts Thumbs Up 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Get one from Dan at Duckworths for £405. Dont buy direct off GAP. Second hand ones hold their value and you could be waiting ages. Sell it on if you move away from LR cars and get most of it back. It will pay for itself many times over! I use mine to lock suspension when garage iPad with IID has run out of battery Rolling with laughter Banging Head 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
