What's more important........spec-history-price?

I've been looking for a while for a 4.4TDV8 Vogue in a certain colour with Ivory interior. To start with I wasn't that bothered if it was just a Vogue (loved someone's signature that said 'poverty spec') but have since looked higher up the spec tree.
I took a shine to a Vogue on fleabay 90k & £13k with 'fsh' turned out it had three LR main dealer services from birth then skipped a load of miles (27k) then had a service at KwikFit (of all places) then a bog standard garage after that. The price was very keen with negotiation possible, making it a cheap buy to be fair as the guy has had it for 6 years. So the "spec-history-price" scenario is 'spec' not bad. 'History' not wonderful. 'Price' good.
Looking at Westminsters with sub 100k miles & decent history, these top out at £18k +/- £2k.
The two examples above have a difference of say £5k, not 'petty cash' to most of us.

If someone has £18k available, does he/she spend the £18k with a dealer with warranty knowing full well you'll see the value plummet like a do-do bird on steroids........or pay £13k with the knowledge you could spend a few shillings if & when she needs something but with a few grand under the mattress?

Interesting subject & look forward to hearing what thee who know more than me think.

ps still looking for Grey/Ipanema Sand with Ivory sub 100k miles if you know of one?😄

Buy with your head sir, if the car seams “loved” then that’s a better place to start than someone who cuts corners constantly! Thumbs Up

I was always led to believe you should buy on condition, condition condition, but Im not convinced.

Good history is important as any gaps suggest a car that has not been well maintained generally - if an owner cant afford to use a 'proper' garage. You also get a feeling from speaking with an owner too when buying privately and get it checked over in any case, or otherwise a reputable garage preferably through recommendation.

I think it's a balance between all the things that have been mentioned and then sometimes an old banger can be a surprisingly good one. Current: FF Westminster money pit

Where the history has been carried out is an interesting point.

ok, so kwikfit etc are obviously a choice based on minimising cost..

But, for example, I use a local garage that I know, know are good at what they do, and that I trust. I have done so following bad experiences at main dealers in the past (fwiw these were before I owned a Land Rover, so were non JLR main dealers).
If/when I come to sell, I appreciate that some people would probably prefer for it to be main dealer history, but I know (and can explain) that this is a choice I have made based on quality service.

When buying a car, I always like to see receipts for the parts (if not included within the service invoices). And Ultimately I want to know that the car has been looked after, and money spent when needed, not only when enforced by mot's.


At that price point I'd probably not worry too much about getting it from a main dealer, but buy the best vehicle I could find (condition), with good evidence of maintenance, and keep a few thousand aside for any unfortunate issues.

My 2011/12 is considered a high miler 120k I change the oil every 6months I do 8-9k a year check everything my self to the best of my ability and advise on this forum mine is running very well and could not be happier. I would steer clear of an LR dealer once you have bought it your on your own unless it falls into a box that can be ticked?Thumbs Up
