Big bang to find 3mm wide crack in the Expansion bottle

Hi, my friend has a 2003 4.4 Petrol Range Rover L322 (M62) BMW Engine.

I received a call the night before last to say he heard a loud bang and then steam coming from under the bonnet.

Upon investigating, we found a 3mm wide (roughly) crack down the back left corner from under the lip down to the bottom.
Any ideas what would have caused this please? My 02 V8's went in February this year, but I didn't get a loud bang and you still couldn't see the split in mine after it went.

Cheers.

I believe its quite common on the V8`s as the pressure is quite high. Use a TD6 cap which is 140kpa. The V8 is 200kpa 2007 TDV8 VSE

Cheers, was just worried that there may have been another reason to the severity of this break. I will be on changing this tonight.
