Premature alternator failure or something worse? | |
Weird one today.
Drove car about 80 miles this morning and parked up to go into a shop, when car was driven afterwards the battery light was coming on intermittently.
Parked up again for about an hour and when car was started again the battery light stayed on permanently, after about 20 minutes of driving things started shutting down, warnings about gearbox modes unavailable and limited gears available.
Then while heading for a nearby layby the battery light went out and stayed out.
In the layby i turned off the ignition and restarted the car.
Drove home the 80 miles with no issues or warning lights at all.
Alternator and battery are both about 2-3 years old.
Has anyone else experienced similar and is there something else other than the alternator that could cause this issue?
When i get a chance i’ll hook up the IID tool and multi meter check the alternator efficiency but really hope its not that as i’ve only just healed the wounds from changing it the last time.
On the plus side i got a set of 20” L494 alloys for £160 which was the main reason for todays journey.
