2010 TDV8

there is a 'clack -clack - clack - clack' (2 clacks per second) which seems to come from the suspension compressor enclosure. it sounds like a relay continuously being energised then dropping out then energised again.

it is independant of the compressor because it clacks when the compressor is running and continues after the compressor stops running.

once it starts clacking it will continue until the engine is shut down and restarting clears the noise.

it is not always present but, when it is, it will continue until the engine is shut down and restarting the engine clears it.

only noticed it when i removed the boot floor to check the spare so may have been clacking for years.

everything works properly.

any ideas?

From Bushy, try putting your finger on the relay and see if you can feel a "pulse" in time with the clacking. Or use the old idea of a screwdriver as a stethoscope. If it's evident try removing the control fuse and see if it stops and/or repacing the relay if so. Just a thought.

Or could it be the dreaded FBH pump??? Cheers

further info:

the noise can be cleared by turning off the heater / air con so seems like it's something to do with that. i understand that the fbh is mounted underneath the lower floor near the spare wheel well which, if it's to blame, would explain why it sounds like its coming from the compressor area.

the fbh works fine however when activated by it's remote

The fuel burning heaters fuel pump clicks like that when the burner is in operation. I believe it's located inside the rear RH wheel arch.

The FBH itself is located in the RH front wheel arch, between the wheel and cockpit. 2007 L322 3.6 TDV8 Stornoway

The pump for the FBH is near the tank, somewhere under floor below the rear seats towards or in the rear OS wheel arch. Mine is audible when in operation at standstill as I have the loadspace cover out permanently for the wife's wheelies.

Can't quite work out which model/engine you have (me confused ) but there's a good FBH write up in the 2010-12 WM in the manual (WM/Climate/auxilliary heating). Cheers

mine is a 2010 VSE 3.6 TDV.

i also have the spare wheel area wooden floor off whilst trying to diagnose the cause of this noise

the noise I'm hearing (2 clack / second) whilst driving (only sometimes) can be cancelled by turning off the heater / air con or turning off the engine.

are you saying that this is the same noise that you hear when stationary and with the fbh in normal operation?

in other words, is this the normal sound of the fbh pump although it shouldn't ever be running whilst the engine is running (because starting the engine would normally cancel any fbh operation) or is it possible that depending upon the inside temp of the car that the fbh could contnue to work temporarily whilst the engine is running as a means to warm the cabin faster on a cold day?

You're right on the fbh working as you say about warming the cabin until the engine coolant warms up and it also depends on the outside temperature. Mine is supposed to stay off above 16C outside temp but can also provide ambient ventilation when the temperature outside is sufficient to make the car uncomfortable when you get in.

The workshop manual is FAR better than me at explanations, but do come back on anything, I'm more than happy to help.. There is a 2006-10 WM which takes a bit of searching through, but it may be similar on the fbh in the 2010-12 WM. You'll find it there in WM/climate/auxilliary heating.

The FBH is primarily an auxiliary heater for the diesel engine, to achieve operating temperature as soon as possible. It'll only heat the cabin if park heating is activated before starting the engene (by timer or remote).

During normal operating it will stay on until the coolant reaches around 170°F.

I must also correct my previous post, as my car is LHD, which places the FBH and pump on the opposite side on RHD cars.

If the noise remains when the car is at full operating temperature, there's probably something wrong.

If your car is equipped with park ventilation/heating, you could try to activate it when the engine is not running (ambient temp is cold, below 41°F). If the noise then appears, you have your solution. 2007 L322 3.6 TDV8 Stornoway
