GPS Splitter

I've been watching with interest fitting an Android Head Unit to my old L405. I can cope with the extra mic and speaker (they can be hidden) but the GPS arial is a different matter so I was wondering if its possible to split the existing GPS cable and supply the android stuff while maintaining the normal Sat Nav. Geoff

I would have thought that trying to split your gps into 2 outlets is not going to work but you could try ? Maybe a bit like trying to split your TV aerial cable ie 100% into the splitter only 30% available on each leg etc . I would fit a new gps and feed it directly into the new unit .

Personally i would be making sure that whatever you do can be reversed as when you come to sell your car a new buyer or dealer is going to mark your value down because if non standard kit or even worse customisation !

Over the years I've had 2 different sony/tomtom double din headunits in 2 different cars and on both I put the GPS antenna under the dash and never had a problem Current

Hi Geoff
Have you bought one of the Android head units?
I have looked at various youtube videos and I think but would like to be corrected that the only thing you miss is the dual screen. Everything else is the same with extra.
The GPS module should be able to be fitted under the dash but near the top but away from speakers I think.

Any comments would be appreciated

No. I haven't bought one yet, loss of dual screen functionality is no problem to me, I only ever show it off to people as its cool but its never been used to watch TV or a Video by a passenger. However, I'm not actually sure this unit is worth the bother for what I do, which is play a bit of Spotify, a lot of radio2 and I just updated the SatNav, sure its a bit slow but then so am I Rolling with laughter .The main issue I have is that people text or WhatsApp me while I'm driving and as far as I can see this unit does nothing to help. My daughters Ford actually reads out text messages maybe even WhatsApp - I don't know - but as far as I can see this unit doesn't do either. I actually do use Waze and Speed Camera alerts from my mobile occasionally if I need to.

But it looks cool and that might carry the day! Geoff

I do think there is another add on you need to buy to connect into the usb flying lead. I thinks it’s around £40 and it a dongle that connects your iPhone via Appleplay but need to do more reading. It’s funny how everyone goes on about the sat nag 🤔 I upgraded mine. Yes it took 3 hours but did improve the locations but not the speed.
I would like to be able to play my iPhone ie mirror it as I have music and films I wish to watch. Text reading would be useful.

If you are going to use Apple Carplay with Waze or Google Maps then a GPS anntenna isn't required as the GPS comes from your phone.

The speaker is only required if you are running SatNav via the Android system ( or Apple Car Play ) but don't have the Car's Audio system set to Aux in so listening to the Radio, the speaker is only really for Audio prompts for Sat nav ( if you use them ) whilst not listening to Aux In.

Make sense ?

Si

I know this is an old thread but my Sat Nav says no signal from the aerial. I bought a cheapo aerial on eBay I assume there is a sat nav lurking somewhere in my car that I can connect it to - where? The reason I am doing it this way is that if I try to remove the trim, drop the headlining and replace the original roof aerial (I suspect water ingress) I’ll break something - I always do. I started this but I don't think its so easy on an l405 as it is on an l322 so I put everything back together and will have another go, another day. In the meantime Waze on my mobile will have to do, well actually apart from the screen size its better that the standard fitment. I also have to program in drives but thats no problem as I am either local (no need for any nav) or travelling a distance in which case Waze is better. Geoff
