If it’s an alloy base (which it appears to be) and a Briggs & Stratton engine, it should outlive us all! Thumbs Up

Don’t bother with any pressed metal bases, as they will rot through with 5 or 6 years’ regular use.

Any 2nd hand self propelled Honda from the Bay will be expensive but worth the premium. 2017 5.0 Autobiography Supercharged

I’ve had the same Hayter since we moved into our current house over 27 years ago. It’s only ever been serviced a couple of times in that period and appears to be indestructible. It will probably outlive me. 2019 L405 SDV8 Autobiography

how big an area to mow, and are we talking lawn, paddock or what ?

If you have a big garden I would strongly recommend having a look at a Robomow Mr. Green
If its smaller, then look at some of the others for less money.

We have around an acre of mixed garden, over half of which is lawn. Used to take me an hour to mow it on a westwood (48" cut). Its deck is now resembling a tea bag after ~20 years. A new deck was going to cost around 700 quid, vs a new tractor of ~£4k.
I bought a Robomow s/h for £700 (they are about 2k4 new) and it is superb.
You don't get a stripey lawn but it cuts during the day, is pretty quiet, there are no clippings to deal with, and little maintenance.
They do take a bit of time to set up as you need to run a boundary wire (took me a day to set up). Too many toys, not enough time

The novelty of doing that wears off quickly enough and it usually gets forgotten about long before the end of the first season! Laughing

I have had an expensive (circa £1,000) Honda self propelled lawnmower and was very unimpressed with its ability to propel itself. It went back a few times under warranty but I gave up on it and bought a Husquvarna self propelled. Half the price and much better.

Depending on how big your lawn is, get a robotic mower

I replaced a sit on mower with one of these two years ago

https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Flymo-1200-Lith...amp;sr=8-2

I now cut the lawn manually once a year before setting the robotic mower off in spring
It mows overnight, the only think I have to do is tidy up the edges.... 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

This Year I bit the bullet and decided to get rid of my two stroke stuff and buy into a good 48v cordless and have to say it's brilliant. No more spending hours a month 'fettlin' trying to get stuff started.

I've got the chainsaw, brush cutter and long reach hedge cutter so far but I'll probably get the mower.

For all you Hampshire boys have a look at George Cann...... Near to the Flower Pots pub if that ever happens... I'm going to ask to borrow one and see how it compares to the current Mountfield I have.... It's going to be 6 months now but I'll post up the results...

I have one of these. Branded as a Mountfield, which used to be a good brand. The Briggs and Stratton branded engine needed a new carb due to a known manufacturing fault within 2 years - not covered under warranty.
Other than that it's been ok, but the deck has rotted through and of course that part is obsolete.

So, I'm in the same boat. Was thinking of a 2nd hand Honda. 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Hayter here, it seems to be bullet proof and has only had new blades / sharpened annually.

Just over half an acre of lawn but to be fair its the gardener who uses it think it will have to be the Hayter as SWMBO wants stripes in the grass ffs
