4.4l v8 diesel starter motor not working

Hi All,
Please HELP.....
So I installed the new starter motor yesterday. Re-connected all the wires and cleaned all the contacts. Pushed the start button and got nothing. Didn’t even sound like it was trying to engage. Couldn’t hear a big click like from solenoid or anything. Checked all connections again and still nothing. So I pulled the new starter back out and installed the old. I got the solenoid click twice but then it started.
Mpirie instructions are perfect and made the job much easier.
I then connected the new starter to the battery with jumper leads and got it to spin up no problems........ slightly stumped as to what is going on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I guess the only upside is that I’m getting good at getting the starter out and back in Very Happy

It sounds more like a dodgy battery terminal connection after you have fitted the new starter motor.

Thanks Mike. I did double check them and ran sand paper over both the terminals on the battery and on both the positive and negative leads.

Their is one old post on here where someone reported that the lead from the battery down to the starter was faulty.
I can’t remember the full details, but in brief, it is made in about 3 sections, not one continuous length, and one of the joints was corroded from memory.

So another night under my pride and joy. The starter I bought is just off fleabay. The brand is aapolham. It comes with 12 month warranty and was £134 shipped.
Thanks for the heads up again Mike
Once again I couldn’t get the new starter to turn the car over. I then ran another wire from the battery and touched it on the ignition trigger point of the new starter motor and sure enough it turned over the engine no problems. Connect my ignition wire again and I only get a small click from the starter but wouldn’t turn over the engine. I then Decide the end of the wire may be corroded so cut that off and soldered in a new eyelet. That did nothing. After rocking myself in the corner for awhile, I installed my old starter again and hey presto, it started.
Does anyone know what voltage I should be getting on the ignition wire? I’m only getting 8.5v but can’t work out why it won’t start the new starter meter but it will my old one.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers Oz

I suggest that you replace the starter relay (6E - engine bay fuse box).

Thanks for you reply Graeme. I swapped the relay over with the heated windscreen one I think it was as it is the same. That didn't help.

The thread in the Wiki for replacing the 3.6 starter mentions that the wire from the starter relay to the solenoid on the starter motor needed to be replaced due to excessive voltage drop. Was your 8.5V measured while trying to start with the new starter when there was load on the wire?

Yeah it was 8.5v with load on it.
Would you know if that wire goes directly to the start relay or somewhere else first?
It still doesnt make sense to me that it can start the original starter but not the new one....

I did cut the end off that ignition wire last night thinking if it would be corroded it is probably most likely and the bottom where it is exposed to more salt and moisture. It looked fine and I soldered a new end on but maybe its further up the wire.....

The relay is only to power the starter solenoid although it may take a circuitous route.

The low voltage and the new solenoid not operating suggests that the new solenoid draws more current than the original. This is likely to be good for longevity of the contacts but does indicate that the wire needs to be upgraded and may be the cause for the problems with the original starter motor.

Thank you for your reply and advice Graeme. I will update once I get a chance to change the ignition wire.

The wiring schematic shows for the wire run:

starter solenoid
2.5mm2 2870mm
connector
2.5mm2 1165mm
solder joint
4.0mm2 1165mm
connector
4.0mm2 855mm
relay

No wonder there's significant voltage drop under load.

A 4.0mm2 direct replacement might only be 2m long.
