Ford Sierra vs the competition (launch vid)

For those of you who enjoyed the Ford Sierra. Quote of the video from this focus group: “very acceptable” (14:30) but my personal lasting memory of this car for some reason was that the heater smelled really nice, a comforting waft. I chopped it in for a 309 GTi which was a whole different experience in literally every regard.

Talking of Peugeot 309 GTI's : I went for a test drive in 1 as a potential new company car decades ago.

Midway down the local dual carriageway while "exploring" the performance at the salesman insistence. the front end of the drivers side parcel tray fell down & jammed my foot down - while at full throttle Shocked
I had to switch the ignition off to slow down & give time to extricate my foot.
The salesman just calmly said he'd ask for an improvement in the Pre Delivery Inspection in future & threw the parcel shelf in the back Rolling with laughter
No mention of the potential disaster we'd just missed.

Peugeot quality back then !! Paul,

Te he, love it... That takes me back to 1986 when i worked for Ford and sold the first 3dr Sierra Cosworth in the SW area... I bought it back from the original owner some 5 or 6yrs later, who still recognised me! Good times... Thumbs Up

After our first Range Rover (4 door crap brown 3.5 Manual) we bought a Sierra XR 4x4 which I liked but we couldn't get the Rottweilers in the back so bought another Range Rover!!

My Cosworth is the only car i have ever seen my wife attempt to drive with her left foot under the throttle!!! Im sure it was something about my driving style that she thought, they all went sideways! Whistle

She never drove it again! Hateful car she proclaimed! Laughing

Wow, I’ve still got some books and footage of the Cossie release. My first one I saw was at RAF Wyton and a Navy Officer bought it, black 3 door. I remember also going south on the A1 coming off a roundabout in my Lime green MG Metro, this blue Sapphire accelerated away like a bat out of hell - I have to get one. Roll on to 1995 and my wife purchased me a Flint Grey Sapphire Cosworth. We spent £1k in the first week putting things right. The fastest I ever went was 135 on the Autobahn and that was my limit. I modified it to 365bhp but from the outside it looked normal (apart from the Mongoose exhaust), that was a fast car and accelerated like nothing I’d then experienced.

A guy in work said one morning - you were driving bloody fast yesterday. I’m puzzled why? He said you went past me like I was stood still and he accelerated to catch the car up. He said he was flat out at 132 (in his new Vauxhall Vectra SRI) and I left him for dead and disappeared. This was on a straight stretch of motorway for miles. I didn’t have the car was my reply but my wife did. I got home and quizzed her, and just smirked. I asked how fast she was going and she didn’t know as the scenery was going past really fast and she was concentrating just on the road not daring to look down. Shocked It was a while before she was allowed to drive again.

I had a burgundy 1.6 GL which I de badged and put Ghia badges on changed the front bumper and grille fitted my own electric aerial and pepper pot wheels - thought I was the dogs testicles. The things you do in your late teens. I can't remember how much the insurance was but it was a LOT!.

There is a Cossie on AutoTrader now for £86K!!!! Very nice but £86K -really?

Wish I'd kept my cossie. Sold it for penny's a few years ago.

If I still had it now I could sell it and buy an l405! Prices they fetch these days are astronomical.

Heck of a prior Ford garage!! Mk I Granada Ghia Coupe.... I hope that was with a vinyl roof. My first car was a 1978 Fiesta 1300S in 1987. Later I drove some pretty basic Land Rovers in the army, but that Fiesta would have given them a run for their money in the poverty stakes despite the ‘S’!

Pawl, I also had a throttle issue with my 309 GTi (fast forwarding now). I went to start it one morning and from the get to it just revved it’s own nuts off. WD40 and a wiggle and obviously resolved, but that didn’t stop the rest of the car falling apart and generally feeling very tinny, but it was seriously rapid and handled brilliantly. Heavy steering, no ABS and a speedo that read 60 when it was doing 70. My next car was a white Citroen BX GTi which was way more sophisticated and comfy but disapprovingly slower given it had the same engine. But its ABS saved a cyclist’s life, so that’s the main thing. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso
