How many Locking Diffs do you have?

So... we all have a locking diff as standard, a centre locking diff. But I did not realise you had to spec a rear locking diff on a range rover?

Can you spec 3... front, centre, and rear? Etc. Thoughts? Pro and con of more or less lockers etc.?

AFAIK you can't spec a front locker

There are pro's & con's - locking diffs can get you out of trouble if you know what you're doing - but equally they can get you into more trouble if you don't.

I say that because they'll get you further into a problem, where recovery is harder - or further up a slope that you still ultimately fail, but then have to come back down again.

For example - lockers got me to the top of this hill, but I still couldn't quite get over the ridge & had to reverse back down




The guy who tried next went to the Clarkson school & gave it a bit more gas -





Without lockers, we'd have struggled to get past half way & been much safer for it....


A front locker takes away the ability to turn tightly & the car tries to drive on - so really needs to be a manual switch

The main case for a rear locker is for when you're cross axled - so the power is locked front/rear, but can then be lost because you have opposite wheels without grip - in this case a rear (or front) locker keeps both wheels on the axle moving at the same rate

Thanks for the wright up Alistair.

Was that Tixover and the last image Rockingham castle?

I think my L405 has a locking centre and locking rear. Although I'm not 100% sure what the centre locker is responsible for

Mine has locking centre and rear, as I discovered on some wet grass/mud when out shooting recently. Came on automatically, but I still had to get a tow from a Defender to get out. Wrong tyres!

The rear active locking diff is standard on SDV8 and on any SVAutobiography. Everyone else pays for it, but not available at all on V6 (you can specify it on a P400e, however, as I have done). L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

Charles, although the original question’s been answered, may I recommend getting half a day’s training at a Land Rover Experience centre, if you’ve not been before? I’ve taken up every opportunity given to go on one and they run through all of this and a lot more besides Very Happy

Correct - I used to go to Tixover quite regularly when I had some toys - never taken a FFRR even on the gentle side.

The LRE was at Rockingham - I got a 1/2 day thrown in when I bought the car, so gave that to my son & I went as a passenger. They had that section set up to demo the diff as you drive into it slowly, then get stuck with the opposite wheels spinning, then the rear diff locks up and you can drive off Thumbs Up

Wet grass can embarrass many a 4x4 - it can be surprisingly difficult to grip - almost like ice

I have taken my FF L405 to Tixover on many occasions. I've waded through 1M of water, and climbed every section apart from the Clay pit. I even did the rock crawl (much to the horror/shock of the onlookers in their play toys). But I've been shown how to use the car carefully, and if it can manage Tixover with ease, then it will cope with almost anything I throw at it in the real world. Ive done Rockingham in my own L405.. and when the winch is installed next Monday, I will be booking the winch recovery course also. In preparation for my up coming expiditions in 2020.

Grass I agree is a tricky to tackle surface when bogged down and water locked.

The main reason I was asking is that when your in off road mode the L405 only shows you 1 Diff on the screen and the status of locked or open etc. And the later 2017 shows you each diff separately on the screen so you can see when each diff is open or locked etc.

I looked at the 4x4 screen on the dash & only have the centre padlock

I then checked the build sheet -

Rear Axle Differential - Rear Axle Open Diff [027CB]

So I guess I don't have a locking rear diff on my SDV8.......

Surely if say one wheel was to lose grip on ice or if it was up in the air ! the traction control would apply the brakes to that wheel only so as the spinning wheel would not rob the other 3 of traction . In effect creating its own locking diff .
