I’ve ended up with one of each, both VSE spec and I’ve got to agree that the 3.6 does seem to get a bad press.
IMHO the 4.4 is better than the 3.6 in a hundred different ways on paper, is noticeably “nicer” to drive, is faster and uses less fuel.
The 3.6 is still a very nice place to be and in everyday use I have never felt that I was in the “wrong” car, my wife can’t even tell which one we’re in.
Both cars are available all of the time and I’m finding that I’m doing more miles in the 3.6 than the 4.4 which has surprised me but I think the difference is that for all of the improvements made to the 4.4, the seat and steering wheel just feel so much better in the 3.6 even with 150K on the clock!

I had a 3.6 for three years and a 4.4 now.

4.4 needs less fuel when Highway-driving
Is really much more powerful. When you kick down the pedal on the highway the 4.4 accelerates like hell
Unbelievable quiet due to 8 gears instead of only 6 gears which means very low RPMs
... and I am not sure : does the 4.4 have better (accoustic) glass?

The things I like about the 3.6 over the 4.4 include a physical oil dipstick, the ability to disable the EGR, being able to fit 18” compomotive wheels, Identical rear shocks so only need to carry 1 spare, and a cable gear shifter (one less electrical gremlin - although the dial is flawless).

However, I don’t thing there’s any doubt overall the 4.4 with the ZF 8 speed is a better L322. ______________________________

Also the 4.4 has the ZF 8 speed gearbox, which as well as being smoother and more economical is considered more robust and less likely to go wrong than the 6 speed, if I ever buy another RR it will be as late,low mileage 4.4 TDV8 L322 than I can afford.

Only late 2015s onwards are Euro6.

L322 5.0 is ok though.

Fortunately I live on the outskirts and rarely if ever am foolish enough to drive into town, the north and south circular extention might be an occasional annoyance but not worth paying the extra for a Euro 6 car for in my case.

I've been toying with the idea of buying another FF in recent months,having spent 18 months away from my last,beautiful 4.2 SC ,are the 4.4 tdv8's any good reliability wise?
Probably looking at a low miles(60k ish)Westminster if I can find one,anything to look out for with one?

expensive cars to maintain, and only more so as they get older.

Ive had both the 3.6 and 4.4 and not had a particularly catastrophic failure on either of them. The worst problem I had was on the 3.6 when the top intercooler hose went and I had to hobble back from northern France. Quick bush fix in Dover got me home.

the 4.4 hasn't been faultless with the tensioner squeak being fairly prevalent on cold and damp mornings, however ive not yet broken down in it..... touch wood. Ive just replaced the battery so she should hopefully be good for the rest of the winter.

The 4.4 is a better car in many ways than the 3.6, though as said a good one of either is a good car, pays your money takes your choice. Both have their weak points though as said the weak points on the 4.4 are less engine destroying than on the 3.6, and the problems of replacement engines for the 3.6 are well documented, but that said plenty of 3.6 rack up big mileages with no real problems, Personally I would have the 4.4 over the 3.6. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

NMJ - belt squeak. Tensioner alone did not cure mine - see points 1 and 23 in my link above to all work carried out to date. I got Rovertune to change belts and idlers whilst having a new turbo fitted and oil pump leak. Sorted it. did my top idler and tensioner earlier in the year, cured it for a while but it has returned with the damp weather. I am going to investigate after xmas madness has passed. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
