2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Galway Green
Smokey 4.4TDV8

Not sure what the exact problem is but whilst driving at a constant speed I am getting vast plumes of smoke from exhausts to the extent that the car behind and most of the scenery is clouded in a whitish grey smoke
No warning lights , slightly more sluggish performance , last approx 30 secs then is gone with no warning lights again!
This happened about 3 time over last week.
Any thoughts before firing into the main dealer who supplied
I'm suspecting its the fuel injection system overfueling somehow but not sure why

I bet its the self cleaning mechanism for the cat.

Try a long run for about 30 mins down a motorway at about 55-60 to try and burn it off and also give it a good boot once the engine is warm to get you upto that motorway speed, get the turbo nice and warm Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

i would think DPF has not had a full clean out as last post

are you doing a lot of non motorway or at least constant 50 MPH + Far to many gone...

Just a thought is it deffo coming from the exhausts?

When i had my fbh swapped it put out loads of white smoke for a while. Worth checking as it could just be deposits burinig off. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Over fueling would be black smoke im afraid, the DPF filters normally have a pressure sensor before and after that sense when the filter needs cleaning and a Re Gen is forced by it running a lot hotter in the filter to release some of the carbon deposits. Sounds more headgaskety to me One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!

white grey can be Turbo seals or head gasket but mine gives out white grey smoke from the DPF auto clean every 1500 miles or so for 1-2 mins , my wifes BMW335 does the same thing Far to many gone...

Get a sniffer test done if thats clear it pretty much looks like a DPF re-gen One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!

I have checked coolant levels and they are fine
Driving conditions are a 17mile each way commute
Bit of dual carriage way then the rest is normal single A road
I would think it is getting warm eneough but maybe not!
The volume of smoke being emmited I think counts the FBH out as have seen that venting before.
Think a trip to main dealer is in order

I really wouldn't worry...it is under warranty - just keep driving it if it's only intermittent...

They will only say they 'cannot replicate.' May as well wait until some crazy crap goes wrong and you need a new engine...

RR has been into the local dealers it has a known fault with an oil seal around a turbo that affects certain 4.4tdv8 engine which is allowing oil to pass into the DPF hence the smoke
Repair will take a few days and involves drilling the block and fitting a new oil pipe! 2011 TDV8 Galway Green Vogue Se

So a dealer tech is going to drill a hole into the block to provide a new oil feed for one of the turbos?!?

Mine had this problem some 12 months ago and at that time the first action was to replace turbo. That was done and then DPF failed! Which pointed JLR in the direction of the problem proper. It seems that the issue is that the turbo can under certain circumstances force back the oil that has passed through the bearings through the seal because the relative height of the reservoir is too close to bearing height. This is the fix to make sure the oil drains properly. 2019 D5 HSE Lux SDV6 Indus

I had a similar problem when accelerating and would look out of the rear view mirror to see plumes of white smoke all over the car i had gone past. Took my TDV8 (11.5MY) into the dealer under warranty and it was repaired as a known problem on the 4.4TDV8.

Apparently it is something to do with the "scour pipe" for the turbo and there is a fix for this. I think (not being technical) it has to do with the fact that oil accumulates around the turbo during acceleration and leaks into the exhaust path which causes it to be burnt-off at high temperature.

There is very little loss of performance or effect on the engine other than the unsightly plume of white smoke which is rather embarrassing (it doesn't go when you take your foot off the pedal, which causes you to really panic!).

Take it in and see!!
