sd1 and RR engine

what are the differences in the SD1 v8 and the 3.5 v8 ? , are the parts interchangeable .

If I remember,there's not a lot of difference. Compression Ratio is lower on the Range Rover SD1 is 9.35:1.The water pump is mounted higher up so the front cover is different. The carbs are different. Strombergs on the Range Rover, as they had an annular float chamber for off road driving uphill and at angles. SD1 had SU's.
The 3.5 V8 fitted in the Stage 1 V8 had lower compression still 8.13:1 i think, and a baffle plate fitted to restrict airflow, so BHP was way down. This could easily be removed.
Most if not all parts are interchangeable

SD1. A very underrated car in my opinion. Especially the Vitesse with the 3.5V8i engine. That unit then went into the Classic in 1986 C/D prefix. Tony

In 1992 ish I had a 1981 3500 V8 in black with tan leather, cost me £1000. 3 speed if I remember? God I loved the low rev burble, it was exactly like the one tonne Land Rovers we used in the artillery to pull the light gun, and I always assumed it was the exact same engine, but reading this thread maybe it was a different take on that ancient Buick classic. And overall the car was a pile of crap so I chopped it in for an 88 1.8 Sierra after 2 years. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

I had one I loved it but my kids got roasted in the back as the route of the exhaust was so close to the floor of the rear seats there poor little bums got cooked this was before heating cooling seats. Laughing

i had a few of those SD1's, from a 2600 auto, through to a v8 manual.... which went like stink, as someone had breathed on the engine a little. it was certainly fast, as the car was relatively lightweight compared to todays cars, but around corners, you could wheel a wardrobe on a skateboard, faster... perhaps due to worn shock, and springs... but terribly soft, and screeched like hell. the rest of the car was so typically built from the era, and trim fell apart etc.. the engine dates back to the 1950's, as was designed by Buick, and dropped, as underpowered. it lasted way into the 2000's... but the castings were so worn, that the later overbored blocks all suffered from cylinder wall cracking and pourous blocks.... coupled with the mineral oil, and black carbon deposits, they used to dump chunks of this black death into the sump, and would block the oil strainer. such a dated engine, but so easy to buy, and modify, and retrofit etc. quite a light engine, but nothing like modern powerplants, with decent fuel injection, and distributorless tech.

The engine is basically the same Buick unit that the (either) Wilkes Bros bought the rights to from Buick. It was originally used as a marine engine for a boat and was lying round when it was found quite by accident whilst on holiday !

The engine was then worked on and slightly revised when the Rover Company got hold of it.
It went in some fantastic Rovers. 3500s, P6B, SD1, Range Rover Classic, Stage 1 V8 109, 101FC, Land Rover 90 and 110 V8, Sherpa vans, TVR's Defender 90, 50th Anniversary V8
Good range of engine sizes too, 3.5, 3.5i 3.9, 3.9i 4.2i, 4.6i. The 4.0 was essentially the 3.9, but badged as a 4.0 because Jeep had the Cherokee 4.0, and it couldn't be seen to be smaller !.
But in essence it's still the same lump. One of the reasons it started being underpowered and leaking like a sieve was when the P38 used it, it was then the last generation of that engine, as BMW had acquired Land Rover and the L322 and BMW 4.4 was in development, so little if any investment to the casting dies were carried out.
It had a bit of development to try and turn it into a diesel in the 80's (Project Iceberg), but that didn't go down well as the stresses were too much for it.
When you think that the 4.2 Rover unit in the LSE Classic was 200BHP and the AJV8 4.2SC produced 400BHP, shows just how underpowered the engine was.
The 3.5 V8 was also a popular conversion into Triumph Stags of that era, as the Stag V8 was basically useless !
All things said, it was and still is, a fantastic and versatile compact V8

The MGB V8 used the 3.5 and the 3.9 version powered the 2000 MGR’s ( most of which were sold in Japan)
