Should I avoid these oil brands for gearbox fluid?

2002 4.4 V8 bmw zf gearbox.
Hi, just about to change the gearbox filter and fluid for a third time due to replacing a solenoid. A couple of cheaper ATF brands have popped up on the radar. Westway ATF LA2634 Lifeguard 5 and Smith Allan ATF LA2634 Lifeguard 5. They are a lot cheaper than branded or stealers, any thoughts? Ta

IMO. Use recommended only. False economy using spurious oils. Just my two bobs' worth. Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

Hi Phil,
Can't say I am any wiser, both oils claim to meet requirements for L322 ZF box and anti shudder etc.. Pennies are tight at the moment and I want to get the solenoid in to see if that was the issue. Chances are almost no miles other than the odd School and tip run.... in a few months I can spend extra £50. I have been using unbranded from factors, other than the transmission failsafe the gearbox has been nice and smooth with no tq issues... fooking frustrating when the bong of doom comes a long! This stuff is cheaper again than my local factors and after contacting both companies they say it is recommended for my gearbox?

Have a look at the many posts from RRPhil, his knowledge of these boxes seems second to none. Ignoring his impartial (unlike the suppliers) advice is not wise, however it’s your car, your choice and your money.

A Trap

I used non-oem but correct spec oil, it sorted my shift issues and surging, gearbox is now very smooth and works as it should, has done for over 10k miles.

Will change again and use the ‘correct’ oem oil next time now I know the box is ok.

Use it as a ‘flush’ oil to give you time to buy OEM if all is ok.

Oil debates are futile based on subjective opinions mainly.

Thank you for a useful real life reply, think too many peeps are hung up on paying extra for brand names. Not planning to service and forget, as with you I will invest in some "proper" stuff before I consider gearbox as a job done.
