Time for a change??

The time may be approaching for a change in veehicule. I thought I would advertise for some advice here before going out into the world of dealers and stealers.....

The shortlist so far, bearing in mind I have yet to drive them.....

1. 65 plate > 405 3.0.
2. 17> D5 in 2.0 diesel guise
3. Last of the D4 sdv6 (fairly known commodity)
4. New deafener in lowish not 100k spec.

5. keep the red shiny for another year......

I’m leaning towards a D5 (even if it is as ugly as sin) as it seems to tick many boxes. The 2.0 diesel is almost as powerful as the 3.0 in the 405 and more economical, and give it take about the same performance. Plus 7 seats, and the cabin seems pretty well screwed together....

Any thoughts?? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

NMJ,
My son has got a D5 commercial 3.0l diesel as his company van.
He does a very big mileage visiting work sites over a big area and he really sings it’s praises.
I have got to admit it certainly goes well and feels well built.
The only bit I don’t like is the offset back end...why oh why they aren’t all centralised like the Sport is beyond me.

That’s the one bit I don’t like tbh.

I just had a quick search on LR used and there are a fair few 2.0, as well as a lot of 3.0. There are also a couple of 3.0SDV6 with the 309 hp engine.....hmmm.....309, that’s the same as my 4.4.... and a lot lighter, so it should go well.

Melksham LR have a nice red one with ivory interior and the 309hp. Which looks really nice. Wasn’t in the original search criteria but might be worth a look..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Firstly, read up on issues with balance shaft bearings on 2.0 litre Ingenium diesels before committing. Bearing failure involves a new engine.

If it’s a choice between a 2.0 litre D5 and an SDV6 D4, buy the D4. A 306 bhp V6 in the D5 is a fabulous engine (albeit without the much more relaxed power delivery of the V8 ) in a car that isn’t a patch on the D4 that came before it. If you like the D4 and it’s a choice between a SDV6 D4 and a TDV6 L405, buy the D4.

However, if you’re prepared to spend the price of a new(ish) D5 with 306bhp, or a new Defender, the answer is really, really easy...

Buy a 2 or 3 year old SDV8 L405 & pocket the change, or keep the current car Thumbs Up

Very Happy

I think budget constraints might rule a 4.4 405 out. I would be in the mid 65 plates at my budget and I want something a bit newer.

I reckon I’d be happy ish with mine plus £25k which should give me a budget of about 40.... going to spend a few hours browsing.

Ideal would be something in red with an ivory interior. With under 40k on the clock. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Unfortunately, the D4 never came in Ivory, but I used to own a very nice Firenze Red / Almond interior D4 on a 65 plate. Almond interiors seem to be very, very rare in the last of the line D4’s. I know, a bust a gut trying to find one (and failed) at run out time. The D5 is pretty hopeless and it’s only saving grace, the 306 bhp D5, won’t be in that price range.

The answer, beyond hanging on to current RR, isn’t too obvious.

I stand corrected on the sub £40,000 306 bhp V6. It’s a nice colour too.

However, for the same price:

Or, with some haggling:

That’s a couple to ponder. There’s not many 4.4s in the price bracket, nor are there many red D5 306hp..... if I looked private I’m sure I am would find cheaper ones of both too.

The 405 is growing on me, seemed huge when it was released, I remember following one down the M40 in 2012 in my old 322, thinking it was an enormous car..... since then the pack has caught up tho.

I’m going to poke some dealers and see what’s out there. That first 4.4 on 21” looks nice. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I’d agree with you there on the first one. Loire Blue and Ivory is a nice combination Thumbs Up The SDV8 4.4 has such great power delivery (idling at 700 rpm, cruising at 70mph with instant pick up at 1,350rpm) and it still has the sense of occasion and it feels like driving a Land Rover product (just like the L322 and D4 before it did).
