Had a strange message on my remote app saying I need a service. My next service is due Nov 2022 or 16k miles. Spoke to the LR dealership in Cardiff and they needed to book the car in for a diagnostic test but thought it could be oil dilution. They said they would put under warranty but will not confirm until test completed. If it is oil dilution is it covered under the LR warranty. They quoted me £400 if not. Not happy as I have only had the RR since Oct 21

Oil dilution does seem a feature of the diesels, and there are quiet a few threads on the topic which you can find by clicking on Search on the bar above and looking for "oil dilution". From memory some people getting very short service intervals did get the costs of the oil/filter paid by LR, but that might be goodwill rather than strictly warranty and takes no account of the time/hassle of taking the car to the dealer. Ownerinfo.landrover.com will give you details of the service and warranty terms for your MY. The warranty depends on the necessary services having been done. While the warranty would cover a defect in the emissions/DPF etc system, it would probably not cover it working as designed but producing an undesirable outcome, in which case you'd have to rely on goodwill.

Thanks for the reply. Grange Hadfield came back to me said not covered but hopefully goodwill will sort out. I am not travelling to Hadfield, let’s see how the local approved Land Rover dealership act. I started another thread on why LR below other dealerships, if I was with BMW all sorted whatever approved dealership you went to.

For the sake of £75 and half a hour on the drive I just did ours, it’s 4 months early and I didn’t fancy two trips to the dealer in such a short period as it’s 30/40 minutes each way. When I spoke to the dealer they don’t update the OSH to reflect the oil service and wouldn’t service ours early under the service plan. They also wanted to diagnose it first @ £160

I did check it was oil dilution before going ahead with the oil change though.

Well took the car into stratstone Cardiff. They said they had no relationship with the approved dealer I bought the car ( Grange Hadfield). Sometimes I wonder why I buy approved. The cost was £366 but after stating I was not happy the charge went down to £250 and Grange will look to give me a full or partial refund. I was advised to avoid the problem again I should drive the car in sport mode once every 2 weeks use the paddle gears , drive for 20 mins in a low gear say 3rd so the revs are over 2000. Stressful with all the calls etc and fighting my corner( I have had the car for 3 months and travelled 1500 miles).

I would say that's a load of B*llocks ref driving in sport mode. regens occur at a minimum speed not revs. Check out RangeroverL322 in this forum for info on DPF and oil dilution.

Search for oil dilution on this forum. this occurs when your car attempts to regen the dpf. It pumps some extra fuel into the system to raise the temp of the exhaust to carry out the carbon burn in the regen. if the region is not completed it leaves extra unburnt fuel in the crankcase which over time dilutes the oil. LR have known about this and there are plenty of cases on the Sport and evoque forums esp the 3.0L and 2.0L engines. Haven't seen much on 4.4L TDV8 engines though.

Oh well more confused. I will look at the forum. Just for ease is there anything I do to avoid it - most of my journeys are short mileage .

Get an IID tool and monitor your DPF regens. That will tell you if it's struggling to complete (and therefore having unburnt fuel left over)

Exactly that. Your short journeys are causing it unfortunately. The supplying dealer should have asked you how you plan to use the car and advised against a diesel. I think your oil dilution issues are not over  2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Not sure if this is of any help but when I had a 2016 Jaguar XJ 3.0d which suffered from oil dilution (asking for an oil change approx every 4500 miles), my dealer told me Jaguar would cover any oil changes up to a maximum of 55,000 miles. It was an approved used car but not from my local dealer who I was taking it to. I had 3 changes carried out but then did move the car on at 53k.

What I couldn’t get my head around was that I was doing 80 miles a day on mainly dual carriageway/fast A roads so you would think it was the ideal journey type for a diesel, very rarely did it see any town driving. The dealer never could give me an explanation for it, it seems to just be a design fault that can affect the car regardless of journey type.

Thanks for the replies. I will speak to LR again. I don’t particularly want to travel 2 hours a week just to avoid oil dilution as the diesel cost will be more than paying for the service. If this is a problem on a regular basis I will need to change which will be gutting as I love the car.

Oil dilution seams to be unavoidable, that’s the case on my 4.4 anyway.
Unless you are doing motorway mileage I doubt 16000 between oil changes is achievable, be prepared to change the oil 3-4 times a year. The good news is that it’s covered by jlr goodwill up to 55k (and possibly higher).

I bought a Bluetooth dongle and monitor the regens, if you can catch each one you may stretch out the intervals.

Well if I have to have 4 oil changes at £366 a pop I will get rid. I had the hassle of getting the car to the garage , not having the use of the car for all day. My MY 2017 4.4 V8 autobiography is 63k miles and I was advised not covered by the LR used 12 month warranty , and only after fighting my corner I got a reduction on the price.

Could you do the oil changes between servicing?
Or get your local indie or garage to change the oil between yearly service?
