Hi,

I've just had a forced DPF regen carried out by a local workshop as the car went into limp mode with red warning. The car was being worked on by same garage who were replacing the rear discs, pads and shoes and there was no amber warning when I left it with them. Can only assume they left it ticking over.

Anyway they have carried out the regen and this has cleared. I now have a really noticeable hesitation at 1500 rpm where the car is quite jumpy if I sit at this engine speed without accelerating. I can see the rev needle jumping too.

Will take the car back to them in the morning but wondered if you guys might have any ideas in the meantime?

I've only owned the car a week - not having much fun!

Possibly. It doesn't seem to be vehicle speed related; more so engine speed and at exactly 1500 rpm. No symptoms at any other engine speed.

It almost feels like a vacuum leak but I would have expected to see symptoms at idle.

did you find the cause of your DPF red? Bmay be caused by an air leak somewhere, either the 4 pipes on the top of the engine (plenum) or one of the inlet manifold's cracked. get a high pressure smoke test done earliest to rule that out.

I said this to the workshop and he just pulled a face at me. So I have new symptoms:

I just took the car for a 20 mile drive on the motorway to see if that might help. Half way, I get a Restricted Performance warning and then a few miles further I get the red DPF Full warning again.

Curiously the hesitation at 1500 rpm doesn't seem to be present in limp mode.

I have a fairly basic OBD reader which doesn't show any codes.

Back to the workshop in the morning!

9.9 times out of 10 this is caused by ai intake air system leak.

9.7 times out of 10 it's the four donut hoses

I had exactly this on my MY2011 and it was the pax inlet manifold cracked. no codes showing.

Steve if you've had it a week that will be for the garage you bought it of to sort.
Just want to highlight that you have decent consumer rights for this kind of stuff.
(If you bought privately however then your wallet may be taking the hit).

Secondly, if the garage is not seeing this engine let alone Range Rovers let alone Land Rovers then you'll be struggling because they'l be on a steep learning curve. As you been experiencing.

Search 4.4TDV8 Restricted Performance and you will find many threads as this is a common issue. i.e. Air system leak leading to DPF full and therefore restricted.

As mentioned it is almost always one of the four donut hoses and they split sometimes not visible (underside) or sometimes a split under/hidden by a hose clip. A white tissue wiped around the donut hoses and joints can reveal telltale excess soot which is a quick check and the first place to go. Other pipes can give way too, in my case the clip securing the intercooler to throttle body hose came loose, the pipe was leaking and I had spluttering leading to DPF full and therefore restricted.

Or, as Dolphinboy says sometimes the inlet manifold can crack and leak.

Lastly, garages sometimes do a smoke test to find such leaks where smoke is pumped into the intake system however you really need to do a high pressure smoke test as normal smoke machines don'r generate enough pressure to find these leaks.

Just wanted to fill you in so you can be informed and sure when you speak with your garage. Do a search too on 4.4TDV8 Restricted Performance

Yes it was a dealer sale. The dealer is some 60 miles away and to be fair has been perfectly reasonable so far in helping sort this given the current lock down situation. I am a hospital key worker otherwise I would be putting this on a shelf right now.

I will give the local garage who are trying to deal with this (a generic workshop) one last chance (Newbury 4x4 who I would have preferred to use have shut for the time being) before I ask the dealer to recover the vehicle and sort it themselves or take the car back.

My wife has a 2014 Freelander SD4 which has been superb and completely reliable over the past 3 years. In the past I have owned a RR Classic 3.5, Disco 1 3.5 and a Series IIa with a 4 litre Landcruiser engine so I'm well aware of the trials and tribulations of the Landrover experience. I've come straight from an AMG Mercedes which was incredibly reliable. I have been aching for a late L322 despite knowing full well it would cause untold pain!

Just a quick update. The workshop found a lose turbo hose connector. Tightened up and everything seems well. Will give it some testing over the weekend to see if all is well.
