Craig, I think you're right but I'm an impatient soul and the maximum I can lose is around a tenth of the depreciation already suffered by the last owners.. I can live with that..!!

Blackdog, yes, there does seem to be some grotty ones out there and I'm after a particular spec colour wise so I'm not just going to buy the cheapest... And yes, some very overpriced ones as well, lets see how desperate for cash flow the dealers are when lock down finishes...

Alan, yes there are several issues that will effect future residuals and throwing Covid in there is another one in the pot... I'm still looking at ones that are 2.1 to 2.9..!

I'm enjoying window shopping at the moment, gives me something to do to relieve the boredom... I'm also reading the workshop manual which is a great story but I've never read one with a good ending..!! Pete

What are your thoughts on the timing chains/guides job? When I looked I couldn't find one with the work done so budgeted that into my purchase and bought the cleanest reasonably priced car I could find. It's not a cheap job as you probably know. Many don't bother and take the risk but it's potentially a new engine (really not cheap) if the timing chains skip.

As these cars are already or are coming up to 10 years old I also factored in diffs/gearbox/transfer case oils and for good measure it's a good idea to change the supercharger oil and bearings. Spark plugs are at 105k.

There are a few of us L322 5.0 owners on here so if you have any specific questions ask away.

Pete I am still driving my 2007 4.2 with 195k on the clock as you know I redid all the underneath rubber and it is still a great car also only showing one little spot of rust so maybe go older and cheaper but of the option you are looking at no 2

Thanks for that, I do all my own mechanical work so timing chain not an issue, whenever I buy a car I always change ALL the fluids, I'd probably do the supercharger bearings as well... and all brake pipes...

The biggest improvement I had on my last one was rear shocks so probably do them as well but they are rather pricey on the later fatties...

I do have a specific question, exactly how bad is the adaptive cruise on these!!

My brake pipes had been done by LR which was handy. Haven't had to do anything on the suspension except replace two link bars on the front - the rest is all good but my car had been looked after quite well. The only thing I've just done is level the suspension all round using he IID tool which has improved the ride significantly - I'd always found it a bit harsh compared to my old 2008 TDV8

The timing chain job is about £900 if you buy original LR parts and replace everything they recommend including importantly the water pump which is a known item to fail.

The adaptive cruise works really well - not sure if I've missed something on that but I'm not familiar with an issue with it and I use it all the time.

I am sure it won't be long before you are grinning from ear to ear.
Also think lots are missing the point that preventative maintenance puts a lot of stuff up for renewal at 10 years etc etc so option 2 wins

WB, I have read a few reviews that said that the adaptive cruise wasn't a very good one... Mind you one of the reviewers missed the point, he criticised it for slowing the car down when he came up behind slower traffic...!!!! Doh

I spent a long time setting up the suspension on my last one, couldn't believe the difference when set up spot on...

Adaptive cruise isn’t bad Pete. Main issue it has is slowing car on a bend on motorway as it thinks those in the lane to your left are directly in front of you....on a right hand bend.... not the cars fault really....the radar is looking straight ahead.

I voted for option 2... that's the tactic I chose. 123K miles, bought from the original owner, over $20K in receipts since the JLR factory warranty ended at 50K. Timing chain guides, several water pumps, front air struts, lower control arms, several sets of brakes, and so on. Option three means you may have that higher price, and the $25K of normal service still ahead. I still paid for some of that maintenance as it was not truly a bargain, but 10 months and 10K miles and the only issue I had was the chaffed wires to the adaptive strut on passenger right side. 10 minutes and that fault was fixed. I did do all of the fluids as you mentioned before I picked it up, and had to put a set of Michelin Defenders on, and now I have to beg the SWMBO to get to drive it! BTW, the 510HP is simply intoxicating!

OK sounds like those critiques of the adaptive cruise had missed the point. Yes it does effectively slow you if the car in front slows and you can set the gap to your desired distance. I don't find it picks up cars in other lanes as I use it on the biggest gap setting which I prefer anyway.

I struggle to think of any car that can beat a 5.0SC for bang for the buck and while sometimes I fancy a well specced L405 I think the L322 is a real modern classic.

The only downside to the 2010-2012 cars compared to my previous 2008 TDV8 is parts prices - things like the suspension bits and electrical parts are more complex and unfortunately a lot more expensive. That said if you really hunt around you can always find bargains. I needed a new horn and picked up a brand new L405 pair for £20 on Ebay which work perfectly - just had to swap over the bracket!

When I got my 5.0 s/c about 2 years ago, I went for option 3.
I bought just about the nicest lowest mileage example I could find. I got a 2010 with 45k miles, which in the summer of 2018 was over £25k.

My logic was why buy a cheap one, and then spend the extra money making it nice. Whereas if you spend a bit more initially, then you should have to spend less running it. While I think the overall costs are probably pretty similar, but at the end of it all, you've got a lower mileage car that should still be worth more to sell on than if you'd taken option 2.

Now on around 55k miles, and it's been great. Very little has gone wrong, and it's still great to drive.

I imagine I've lost a fair bit in depreciation, but that was expected.

Yep it's a bit of a balancing act, at your mileage it makes more sense buying the best but when the option 3's are 50-60% more money and still have 80,000 miles the difference is less...

Yes, yours will have lost massively on depreciation, I'll give you £5,000 for it...  Pete
