Car lifts / ramps

Thinking about getting jacking car ramps/ lift for the L405 and also for occasional DIY work on lighter cars.

The handbook shows the vehicle weight of the L405 3.0 TDv6 is 2160kg and for the 4.4 TDV8 it’s 2360kg.

Do we think these lifts would be okay for those weight L405 - presuming this tilting lift isn’t bearing the full weight of the vehicle, ie either the front or back wheels will be bearing a fair amount of the weight when the car is tilted?

No I wouldn’t risk my life using one of them for the Range Rover ide buy one with a min rating of 3t regardless if it’s only to lift the front or the rear.

If it’s only for light mechanical work and not to be raised too high just buy a good high lift jack and tall heavy duty axle stands

I agree with t5pete, 3T minimum, also better you also have something that locates in the recommended lifting points

Thanks for the replies.

I’d always use axle stands anyway so hoped that 2T tilter (only to be used with the RR with the front or rear wheels grounded) would be safe if the weight of the TDV6 is only 2160…

The 2 post thing would be too cumbersome and permanent a fixture for what I’d want.

I have one of these V8 Bob points out, its a fabulous piece of equipment that lifts my SDV8 l405 no problem, its also portable so if you have a garage to store it you can roll it out onto the drive to work on the FF. Perfect for all sorts of work. Cost me 1500 quid but worth its weight in gold.

It looks great and being mobile you could use them outside in nice weather, but a few questions

What's that black block running along the length off the ramp 3 x 3 timber? steel?
Do the hinged yellow extension pieces line up with the jacking points? would be worried that the extension pieces are hinged and, are they flimsy, just where you want them to be at their strongest at the jacking point?

Hi Kot, I use steel box section to give extra strength across the ramp. It does lift the car without them but end pieces flex and I want to be sure I’m 100% safe under there. Other cars are different and fit on the main part of the platform, L322 would for example as you could use the chassis as a limiting point, but the 405 does hang over, hence the mods, works well though.

I have one of these and its the dogs...No issues or flexing.

Very heavy but comes with jacking wheels and detachable handle etc. Also comes with a range of rubber support blocks. You just have to Mae sure the 405 is dead centre.

I still use axle stands under the ads and a bit of peace of mind.

Worth its weight in gold.

Had it a couple of years now I think is was about £1800.00 inc vat and delivery.

Just to add, the extension pieces do line up with the jacking points unfortunately due to their location on the 405, although they’re not in any way flimsy, my thoughts were they’re hinged so I use the extra strength for peace of mind. If you have electric side steps it does help as the jacking points are more inboard but I still go with spreading the weight where possible.
As ajac8 says they come with wheels and moving handles and an assortment of rubber blocks Thumbs Up

Depending on your garage height, you may be better off with a 2 or 4 post lift. I put in a four post in 2008 mainly to use to double up parking, but its proven much more valuable over the years to allow me to mess with the cars in comfort and without danger. Mine was from InternBV in Holland, but the same design is widely available from others - usually a couple at the classic shows like at the NEC. Back then price was about £1500 but I think they're nearer £2500 now.

OP you have to be happy and safe with what you want to do and only you can decide that from how you plan to work on your car, but also the wheels are not rated for 3000kg each Exclamation

Great replies, thank you… would like a 2 or 4 post lift of course but don’t think would use it enough and don’t think our garage roof height is enough for one of those (on the cars yes but not the RR)… excellent big long and wide double garage but not the tallest ceiling height…. think a scissor lift or those ramps that you drive on to and hydraulic jack up might be the way to go… thoughts thoughts thoughts Thumbs Up

Ryan, go for a 4T 2 poster. £1500 will buy you a new unit from eBay and for another £100 or so most companies will come and install it too!
It might only lift your RR half way up (garage height) but at least the car will be 100% safe on it. When not in use you simply park between the two posts anyway! Easy peasey… 👍
