I've seen some instances where the "supposedly" younger 17 plate car according to the registration date is a MY16 and the "supposedly older 66 plate car is a MY17 Whistle

The only definitive way is to try and get hold of the VIN number when the new MY cars were being produced. Everything else just depends on knowing the detailed changes between model years. Some are easy to spot, like the centre infotainment screen change between MY16 and MY17. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

Entering the VIN on https://osh.landrover.com/ will tell you the model year. Entering it on www.vindecoderz.com will give you a lot of extra information.
