Space Saver Wheels and Sizes

I would like to buy a space saver wheel for my 2004 L322, I have 19" rims for my winter tyres and 21" rims for my all season Pirelli Verde tyres, if I buy a 19" space saver tyre, will it be OK for me to do this, I know that you have to pootle along at 50mph with these space saver jobbies, so it's probably OK, but just wanted some re-assurance before I buy one in the next few weeks

NB I should add that I run LPG on my petrol V8, and the LPG tank is in the spare wheel void, so currently running without a spare, which makes me a little nervous for some long trips I am planning for in the summer Smile

Put the 2 into https://tiresize.com/comparison/ and make sure they are close - the OE tyre sizes should be pretty much identical to each other in terms of overall size

I don't think you need to worry about a space saver wheel / tyre being smaller than the wheels fitted to the car. The rolling circumference will make no difference, the wheel will just rotate at a different speed.
The purpose of the space saver wheel is simply to keep the hub off the road surface until you can get to a repair facility, albeit at a slower speed than you would normally like.
I would personally buy an 18in space saver wheel.
Just one thing, if you need to use a space saver wheel I would arrange it to go on the back of your car even if this means shuffling wheels about.

Few tins of tyreweld and a compressor is a better choice IMO

Why is my space saver spare wheel smaller in diameter - should this not be the same?

We have lots of past customers which have changed wheels and tyres smaller or bigger, and we have advised you must keep the rolling radius the same or within 2.5%

There are no locking diffs to worry about on the 322 so you won't upset the transmission, however if you go too far out of size the DSC will get the hump, it uses the steering angle and ABS sensors to determine if you are skidding, if turning a corner it expects an imbalance in speed across the axle, if you are going in a straight line and one wheel is going faster than the other then the system may think you are skidding and start taking action... Suppose you could turn it off if you use the spare,,,,

I've had LPG and no spare in loads of cars as dingg1 says a couple of cars or tyreweld and you'll be fine..

The AA now says, on average, you get a flat tyre once every 100,000 miles..!!! Pete

thanks all - I just cannot take the risk, I visit construction sites almost every day, and get 5 to 10 punctures a year Sad

so both a space saver and the tyre glue/compressor will be in the boot Smile

however, not sure if I have made a mistake or not, but I sold my 19" wheels today - amazingly a VW owner bought them for top money, he had a rather nice blingly T6 and was delighted Smile

so the search is on for space savers, bearing in mind this rolling circumference thing sounds sensible

so I did some tyre size comparisons, these seem to be the most popular space saver tyres

1) 155 85 18" rims

2) 175 80 19" rims

3) 195 70 20" rims

so the biggest 20" seem to be the best for my 21" wheels with 275 45 21" profile tyes - not really very much of a space saver, but it is - what it is - I suppose - all good fun Smile

A better idea might be to buy run flat tires rather than mess around with micky mouse tires.

Why a space saver. Why not just buy a proper wheel and tyre? Means you haven’t got to pootle, you don’t have to get it fixed there and then, and they can be picked up for cheap. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

a 21" takes up nearly all the room in my boot, so I am trying not to go down that route

a 20" space saver I could just about fit on the left hand side of the boot and clip it in place, I am still all a bit undecided

as Stan says, shame the run flat is not an option ( albeit an expensive one ) Sad

Are you running LPG and not able to put under the floor?

Edit just seen that..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

You could always treat each tyre with Slime tyre sealant to deal with punctures, you wouldn't need a spare at all then.

You really wouldn't want them - they give a noticeably firmer ride & the wheels are heavier. The sidewalls are much stronger, somewhat obviously, to keep their shape, so they transmit more shock to the wheels which therefore also need beefing up....

The theory is great.....
