Intermittent no crank after turning to pos 3 TD6

Hi all

My Td6 has an interesting starting issue. When you insert the key, you hear the steering lock disengage, I usually turn it to position 2 to allow the car to initialise and the fuel pumps prime up for 5 or so seconds which also allows enough time for the glow plug light to come on and go off.

When I move from position to 2 to 3, Two things happen it either doesn't allow me to turn to position 3, to engage cranking to start the engine "or" the ignition barrel allows me to turn it to position 3 but the car does not crank over, almost as like you've got a flat battery, but it isnt. The dashboard is all lit up, radios on etc. Repeat this saga 2 or 3 times and the car cranks over and starts like nothing ever happened.

It does this sometimes once every few days or many times in a day

I've read similar posts on this forum relating to an ignition barrel but the issues were being displayed like mine

Is it common for the ignition barrel to go in these ? I didnt know whether the car was immobilising itself, hence me locking unlocking the car.

I've read it with CARLY and nothing is being displayed, its been elsewhere today at a diesel specialist for a read of the fuel pressures for something else, and no faults were present relating to this

Video on youtube which occured this mornin

Cheers

Ignition barrel problems are common and not too hard to change, just some fiddly clips / screws.

When it is running, check the battery voltage, if it's not 14+v you could have earthing or alternator issues too. Mine had both barrel and earthing and both had similar symptoms.

Now you meantion it I did have a similar issue of a skoda fabia vrs,
there was an obvious wire break to the starter motor. where
power to the vehicle and intermitant crank, but would always allow
me to engage position 3 on the ignition barrel.

This looks like the genuine OE part

How about the blade, will I need to get another one to fit the new barrel or ?

Many thanks

No Blade needed, you only replace the switch part, not the actual barrel. From memory it just clips / screws together

You can get good quality aftermarket parts for half that price, I used Green Oval sales and Spares as they are local to me.

what about the shifter, the manual doesnt say anything about removing that.
Is there enough flex to get to the ignition switch then or has the whole centre console gotta come out, shifter included ?
