Humming/rumble/droning/vibration at low speeds

Here we go again....

So after having had the car back from major surgery for about 4 weeks, I am now getting a humming/droning/vibration at low speeds. It is not always there but more increasingly so.

The sound comes as I lift off the throttle at low speeds. I did have it once at higher speed (60mph-ish) and it was a constant humming and clearly audible. I pulled over, turned the engine off and the sound went away.

The car has brand new tyres and its had a four wheel alignment done by LR.

I had a wheel baring changed on my Disco 4 which was a similar sound/feel but my indy says it´s rare for these to fail on the L322s.

The car has done about 78k miles, Any ideas what this can be? RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

Did you have the sound before the new tyres were fitted ? 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

I dont think so.

Also didn’t have it in the first couple of weeks or so after getting it back from the garage.

Its come in the last two weeks and increased last few days....

I’ve driven it approx 900 miles since fitting new tyres and having the wheel alignment done RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

Anyone got any ideas what this can be? It´s starting to drive me nuts....

Most prevalent around 25 mph and revs at 1.000 rpm

Wheel barings have been tested and eliminated.... RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

I had a humming/resonance noise that was quite a deep sound. Had it on a ramp Friday and held it at 1000-1100rpm where it was worse. Mechanic said it was the heat shield on the bottom of the gearbox.

He did a bit of adjustment and now silent. He also crimped up a cat shield as well that was loose but that was not the cause of the noise. 2011 4.4tdv8 Vogue

I had the gearbox done about 3,000 miles ago, both oil and filter - perhaps something has come undone?

Will get it on a ramp tomorrow and check.

Thanks! RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

Could be a bent or loose heat shield. Worth a check before spending money. 2011 4.4tdv8 Vogue

So finally got the car on a lift and indeed several heat shields and other bits were loose. Indy tightened everything he could find bu the humming is still there....

Only appears at 1.000 rpm and most audible as revs drop but I now have it every time and its annoying.

Any other ideas what it could be? RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

Thanks for the suggestion Mark but the problem is it only comes under load. Even with the car in drive and breaking with my left foot its hard to replicate using the throttle. But as soon as the car is moving its there.... RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

Don't discount wheel bearings if the sound is only present whilst moving. I had a front left go and I think I am starting to hear a rumble from the front right. Mine have done around 100k miles. Rob 05 L322 4.2SC

Hi Rob,

We discounted it only because my indy test drove the car, chucked it pretty hard from side to side and we got nothing out of it.

My biggest concern is that it is something gearbox or engine related? RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

Funnily enough, my car has started to make a similar noise too. I only noticed it a week or so ago when pulling away from the lights. If I take my foot off the accelerator and coast, it disappears but when I reapply power, I hear it.
My initial thoughts were wheel bearings, but since it’s not there all the time, I can’t see how it could be that.
I just hope it’s not something in the drivetrain that’s staring to get tired Shocked Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
