Anyone had a defender 110 thats had a L322 or L405?

Thinking of a interim car whilst I wait on my GWagen build being confirmed and wondered how "rough" is the drive compared to a Rangie.....

I'm open to honest views.....

Fancy a 110 pickup..... all smug in my new plug!

United Kingdom 2016 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Santorini Black

Only had one for a few days when mine was in for a service.

It’s not a particularly comfy or quiet place to be. Compared to a 405 it’s a totally different world. Quite cramped width wise, you can hear the puddles hitting the inside of the arches, and the turning circle is a joke.

But if it’s a stop gap and you aren’t going to do big distances in it, then it might be fun for a while. My old neighbours drove an early 90’s 110 V8 back from Portugal so it can’t be that bad........ and if you buy right you are unlikely to be out of pocket when you move it on. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

A friend had a 110 as a daily and could only put up with it for a few weeks. Noisy, uncomfortable and with a turning circle of oil tanker proportions. That said, I also know someone with a 90 fettled by Twisted Performance which he has no intention of even changing and he commutes about 30 miles in that daily - or he used to.....

Having driven my pals the once, I think the novelty of driving a 110 round town will wear thin pretty quickly. Current: FF Westminster money pit

I would say excellent, as long as you dont need to drive it, they are like driving in a bath backwards whilst being dragged across a craggy path, but a whole lot more noise and discomfort. They are quite a lot of fun though as well.

They are excellent at what they do,and can be a bit of investment if you can find one at a reasonable price, get one of the last autobiography ones but most are north of 50k, but at that money why not but a new Defender.

If you want something with the comfort of a L405 then buy a L405 temporarily, at least you will have one when you get fed up with the G wagon. Very Happy

For many years my works van was a swb Land Rover . When I bought my first Range Rover , I thought it was “magic” and could not wait to get out in it after work to enjoy the feel.
I then got promoted to manager and used it as a mobile office for many years, visiting hill top radio masts.

Thanks for the comments, its good to hear the different views. Just struggling to find one to test drive anywhere near me, but my mate has one so maybe go see him.

I'll take note of that DrF, as I might just buy something like that - I was trying to go newer and lower miles than the 100k I have as I am ok for now but just dont want to get started off in the older 100k+ repair bills that will hit at some point, but with doing low miles I'm fairly ok for now.

It was in last week to get some lights off that flashed up but came to nothing but parking brake showed this week as a light so albeiot I'm not worried about the car as its in the best shape of its life, I am just thinking about moving to something newer and have seen a few pickups I like the look of but just not sure if I can handle something so unrefined!! Time will tell! all smug in my new plug!

I went from a 110 to a L322, as much as i liked the 110 I would never go back.

I’d second the comments above.
Agricultural is only accurate if you are referring to a 1980’s or earlier tractors, newer tractors are more comfortable, easier to drive and quieter.

As a work vehicle they make sense but as a family car, daily driver then there are far better options out there.

England 2005 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Zambezi Silver

I had the urge for a Defender around 2014.

At the time my main car was a L494 so the next time it went in for a service I asked if I could have a Defender as a loaner.

They gave me a 110 XS with 600 miles on the clock. I drove 20 miles back home and knew that I wouldn’t be able to live with one long term. Vague steering, a gearbox out of the Ark, so much noise in the cabin that even the dogs didn’t like riding in it.

Just my experience. I guess that if you lived on a farm it would be ideal.

Jim

In addition to the comments made by others, which I think are spot on, the Defender is not great re safety. No airbags, lots of hard surfaces, no crumple zones and, depending on your build, there is a big protruding bolt that holds the top of the driver seatbelt in the door frame just where your temple would hit in the event of a side impact, same on the passenger side. I think it's not a good performer in elk test situations either. Interior trim is not nice and door seals are prone to peeling off.

On the plus side the chassis and drivetrain are robust, residuals have been good, it has a strong image and they do put a smile on your face, but more in the context of a loan car for a few days than any longer. Only Range Rovers since 1988

My next door neighbour bought a 90 for her daily trek to do her horses. She's just re-bought the disco 4 she sold. This after she got tired of the 90's freezing, damp interior, bad handling and poor ride, especially after she slid off a minor (paved) road into a ditch one morning.

So, NO, don't do it!!

Oh that one reminds me, despite all that’s said about being best 4x4 by a little bit or something like that?
They are bloody rubbish in the snow! Scared the dung out of me one winter!
Freelander2 was better in the same conditions.
Good luck.
