Control Arms & ball joints

I have ordered new control arms and ball joints as the bushes are shot.

I was thinking of removing bolts from the ball joint and then knocking them out by hitting the control arm. This will save on messing with a splitter and struggling with a stuck ball joint.

Anyone tried this before?[/i] 2011 4.4tdv8 Vogue

I did this on the upper arms where the ball joint faces downwards when I replaced the bushes on that arm. If the arms are being replaced you could leave the bolt on the top of the lower arm and hit it out on the bolt with a large hammer. Sometimes they go sometimes not. Did this on my Porsches as the arms on those were cast so would snap trying to bash them out on the arm.

It's just getting the ball joint free and breaking that tapper. You could loosen it keep the nut on but get some penetrating fluid down there and then turn the steering wheel a few times too. Obviously not driving just stationary.

The easiest way I have found though is a big pickle fork, hammer it in and normally they pop but it will destroy the ball joint boot so you can't reuse. Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

I am good with destroying the ball joint as I have replacements. I was just thinking if I clubbed the arms it would remove the ball joint more easily than if I split the arms first. I just wondered if it would work. 2011 4.4tdv8 Vogue

do you mean the ball joint cassette?

I believe it's easiest to destroy the insides, then collapse it in on itself with a chisel

Which ones are you doing the uppers with the separate ball joint left on the pic or lower with the integrated ball joint right on the picture?

I don't think, ulesss your really lucky, you will get the upper arm ball joint out that way from what I've seen on here and Facebook the struggle people go through with them. The lower one you probably could at a push

You can give it a go depends on how badly corroded in there they are. Most people I've seen post who've done in needed to smash them out use chisels or impact hammers or heat.

You don't want to start and mess up the arm and can't get the ball joint off and stuck unable to drive it. They are pretty substantial arms so you'd have to go some to snap it though. Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue
