Repair or replace L322 TD6

Couple of weeks ago my TD6 gearbox failed (the GM one) & a number of well recommended places have quoted around £2.5k for a complete rebuild with new torque converter.

It's due for an MOT this week so the test result will effect my decision on whether to repair or replace.

However, moving on. If I decide to replace maybe I ought to save the pennies & look towards getting a TDV8 4.4
The TD6 is OK but struggles a bit towing my 14' 2.5T Box Trailer.

AFAIK the TDV8/4.4's have a two stage turbo & the 2nd one can be problematic if the car has been likely used.
Can anyone offer any general pointers/advice please.

TIA Sam.

The only problem with the 2nd turbo is purely cosmetic in that it blows out a cloud of smoke if not used for a while. The torque on the 4.4 is so large you will likely never need to go past 2400rpm when towing anyway. I can go months without needing the 2nd turbo….
It all comes down to your budget which is? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Thanks Jay.

I can put up with a smokescreen once in a while.

At this stage I'm not even too sure of the prices although I may have to save (I have a runabout to keep me going for a few months & will not need the trailer till the end of the year).

Prices for anything seem to be all over the place at the moment.

Have seen a fair few comments on Tube of U and elsewhere over the years about the robustness - or rather the lack of it - on the TD6 engine and gearbox. Have you ever seen how small that crank is, for example... Apparently, also, pulling a load (especially uphill) is not liked by the TD6 set up ESPECIALLY if a too high gear is used. But a guy who recently cleared all my three and a half years of constant faults codes popping up (where both LR and RR '''experts''' could not help - though still charged me) after ten minutes of running, said he didn't think the TD6 was that bad. So hey-ho...

Confused

Prices are only in one place - way up! £18-20k from a dealer for one in good shape. Higher than average milers come in cheaper to buy but you can easily spend the difference fixing bits that fail when the age and miles pile up.
I'd avoid the 3.6 as the EGR's are an almost inevitable failure item that will take out the turbo's and possibly the engine which then lands you with a bill that makes your gearbox repair seem like a service. Infact even if the EGR's don't fail and have been replaced the turbo's can still fail + you have the weaker 6 speed ZF vs the 8spd on the 4.4. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Well, about to take the car to the MOT station (only 200 yards away) & no driver - at all - forward or back, high or low ranges, tried sport setting & nothing, not even a noise.

When the gearbox "failed" I did manage to limp home with it.

So, looks like the car will be scrapped, pity in a way as I had the welding & wheel arches done 18months ago.

Moving on the MOT tester came round & with the suspension raised had a good look around underneath & proclaimed it sound underneath.
The discs are now pretty rusty (they were a little scored before) & will need replacing, but everything else apart from the A/C seems to be OK.
So, I may get the gearbox rebuilt, just need to find somewhere good & not too far away as the car will have to be recovered to them - anyone got any suggestions please ?

Just a thought……the boxes I believe are identical to the X5 so in theory there ought to be many second hand boxes kicking about in specialist breakers that’ll come with 30 days warranty minimum……worth a try?
You can buy new or refurb torque converters if you so wish, just trying to ease the budget for you.

Thanks for the info' guys.

I'm in East Kent so it's an hour or so's recovery to almost anywhere.

I'll give Sussex Autos' a call.

I did give the X5 gearboxes a thought but they may have different rations or electronics.

From memory, there was a specialist in the Dartford area that was well thought of on here ?

The X5 doesn’t have a low range transfer box. I know that’s not really part of the gearbox, but it will prob mean that the L322 box is different to accommodate said item.

Could be wrong… I’m no gearbox expert.

Sonnax used to do a fix kit for the TD6 gearbox, but that’s prob too expensive now, given the age of the cars.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Now that I've added up the cost of a decent gearbox rebuild (around £2.5k), some welding, minor paintwork (sun bleach), discs (badly rusted die to standing around), pads, A/C condenser & regas to bring her up to spec' it's not really worth it which is a shame because she is an original unmolested example.

So, it's probably going to be a "spares or repair" sale or break her.

Cannot go to a later L322 TDV8 so currently I'm looking at Discovery 3's & (dare I say it on here) RRS's.
