L322 4.4TDV8 Wheels 19" v 20"

My quest for a decent L322 4.4tdv8 goes on. Of the four I have viewed to date, only one had 19" wheels. Any particular reason for the popularity of the 20's? Handling improvement, or is just a 'style' thing? From my limited experience, the higher the sidewall the better with regards to protecting the rims.

'standard' Vogue's tend to have the 19"s
SE and ABs got the 20"s
but you could spec up. Cheers, Greg

19s will be a softer ride as more rubber "depth" from rim to ground.
Do you specifically want 19 over 20? They sometimes come up on ebay.
Alternatively fit 55 profile tyres onto 20 rims to get the same effect. Lots of folks done it with no issues. I plan to do the same on my next set. Standard = 255 50 20. Go to 255 55 20 for extra depth Thumbs Up 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

I wouldn’t worry too much about the size of the wheels when looking, there are more important things to look out for. You could buy a set of 19” on eBay and sell the 20s. The ones for sale now don’t look great but you could get them refurbished and it still won’t cost a huge amount. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

I could be wrong, but I thought all 4.4 TDV8's had 20" rims, as the 4.4 TDV8 has 6 pot Brembo's (same as the 5.0 Supercharged) and 19's won't clear the massive front calipers.

EDIT - I prefer 19" rims if I'm honest, as the extra tyre depth gives a better ride on the rubbish roads around us, but stuck with 20's on our 4.4 TDV8 without modifying. From my research, the only option to fit 19's over the 6 pot Brembo's is to shave some material off the calipers or fit 19" Disco 3 HSE rims.

4.4 TDV8 Vogues had 19" style 15 as standard, these clear the bigger calipers. 20" wheels with 255/50R20 give quicker steering, firmer ride, more precise handling. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Throw a 55 profile on your 20s and you’ll notice a difference on your roads over 50 profile,
It’s a common upgrade for Censored roads Thumbs Up 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Thanks DrRob,

I'll look into it. Just a bit worried about that being classed as a modification from the insurance companies viewpoint! You know how it is these days!!

I stand corrected on the 19" wheel fitment, that's really good to know. Many thanks!

Thanks for this thread everyone.

I’ve just bought my first fatty and I love it, despite the aftermarket 20’ wheels - although at least it has decent grabbers on it.

Anyway, my quandary is - source 4 x 19s and sell the 20s or go for a deeper wall on the 20s when these grabbers need changing.

I’m more about practicality than show and it will get muddy at work now and then.

Appreciate thoughts from those with experience.

Cheers

Jools

Hi
Have 2011 Tdv8 Vogue purchased with 20” wheels which were supplied when new as an option. In standard form it would have had “style15” rims which are 19” these fit over the 6 pot Brembo on the front as I believe 19” rim from a D4 do as well- but never tried.
Sold the original 20” wheels & got the 19” have put grabber AT3 on 255/55/19 found them excellent on the road & hopefully trying them off road next week.

Have also another set of 19” with mich cross climate which appear much quieter than the original 20” shod with Pirelli scorpions, mich cross climate not available in 255/50/20
Cross climate does not have any side wall reinforcement as an all terrain will have

19” tyres are also cheaper than 20”

Demand for style 15 rims appears to be fairly low in general so costs reasonable

If using 255/55/20 on a L322 you are technically deviating from the standard size tyre which constitutes a “ mod “ for insurance purposes, most likely going to be an issue when a loss adjuster wants to reduce a claim !

Hope all this is of some interest
Cheers

In regard the comments about using a 55 profile tyre, there were previous discussions on here somewhere about that and someone had contacted LR who apparently responded that both 50 or 55 are fine for this vehicle. Not necessarily a bullet proof statement for battles with insurance companies but a relevant data point.

I have run 55's on mine for last 10 months and whilst I'm used to it now when i first put them on did notice an improvement with a smoother ride. RR Vogue TDV8 Grey/Black
