Tdv8 3.6 dead turbos + more?

Just bought an immaculate (Ignoring Scotland rust) 79k mile tdv8 to replace my td6.

It came with 2x dead turbos diagnosed by a landy specialist. I was in dropping off a part for my mums tdv8 and asking if anyone would be breaking a l322 due to a terminal issues get a towbar off, got pointed in the direction of this car which was the right sort of price to just buy the whole car.

79k miles, full main dealer then specialist service history, 7k of bills in the last 3 years and he lost 14k in depreciation in 4 years.

Going up a hill accelerated, lost power, cloud of smoke and got it recovered back. Down pipes were removed by specialist. One is full of oil with a floppy turbo shaft, the other one is dry but seized solid. To make it run to drive into the garage from the truck they removed the intercooler hoses to the intake manifold, however the intake manifold has a build up of oil on hoses and connections and not just at the end which has been disconnected.

I have already purchased 2 new turbos to fit, will remove intercooler as I assume it will be full of oil/exploded turbo blades if they have let go.

From my hours on google a check of egr and oil pipes to the turbos should be on the cards to see if either caused failure. However the oil all over the intake manifold sounds like it may have a crack somewhere?

Does anyone have experience with failure in this manner with both turbos having gone together? Without being the old owner I wouldn’t know if he was maybe just driving with 1 seized turbo and was unaware till the second let go.

When my TDV8 lunched its turbos the service manager at Keith Gott said it’s common when a turbo fails that so much oil leaks past the turbo seals that the other turbo oil feed suffers oil starvation, causing that turbo to fail. Since you have one side leaking large amounts of oil into the intercooler (same as mine, there was loads in it), it’s quite conceivable that the other turbo will have suffered oil starvation. I didn’t bother to strip the turbos off mine as I stripped/scrapped it anyway, so cannot confirm exactly what occurred.

Mikey your name keeps popping up when I have been researching this.

When you have done turbos what are the main things you look to have been damaged when they broke?

Not too worried about doing the job dropping subframes etc, more worried about not spotting a cracked hose which caused the issue in the first place.
