England 2003 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Monte Carlo Blue
zf gear box problem

Evening All, A few weeks ago my car (l322 4.4 petrol, 2003) had a problem with the gearbox, basically in went in to safe mode
no warning from dash, long story short, i changed gearbox fluid, filter, both trans cooler hoses, trans cooler, trans cooler back plate, radiator & carried out the T-stat modification, car was running fine until last Sunday, on my way to fill up i hit the A47, took the car up to 60, went to over take another motor, kicked down, everything fine, then a bong from the dash trans fail prog flashed up then went out, a few seconds later trans message appears again then car bangs into 4th, couldn't move shifter into manual, just stuck in 4th, got the car home ( i had my icarsoft connected & recording, as my son wanted to borrow the car & i was just making sure everything was ok) the code that was thrown up was P0720. I reset the fault codes & took the car out again( recording data, drove about 6 miles) the car performed normally, no problems, after reading up on the Code it looks like the transfer box, so when i got home from work tonight i selected low gear car switched to low, after a few seconds the icon on the dash started to flash, drove backwards & forward a few times & icon stayed solid, then selected high gear, again car switched to high, done this a few times, worked every time. haven't a clue what caused the problem, has anyone any ideas? i'm going to paste the recorded data for the fault & the recorded data from tonight, hopefully some one could shine a light on the data & see something ive missed or if everything is running as it should

Being a complete dumba** all I can can see are the wheel speeds are different with one being consistently double that of the other three.. ______________________________

Hello Simon, thanks for your post, I agree, I'll get another sensor & fit, the thing is with regards to the data, is that I don't know if the TC readings are good bad or indifferent, the data I've pasted to the post is just a snap shot, there are over a hundred readings, all basically the same as the ones I've put on here, obviously they start on the initial start up, from 1st gear through to 5th gear, weather or not the problem is with the transfer box, I don't know, hence putting on here just to see if anyone could shed some light on the matter. It really was a bolt out of the blue, considering what i have replaced on the car, I even went so far as to book the car in with a auto box garage to diagnose/test, came back clear, no faults on the gearbox, only code that it threw up was a P0691, which is for engine cooling fan control fault, I'm hoping it was/is the transfer box, put it into high & low modes last night, went through ok, I'm going to try the calibration procedure tonight, see how it goes, the only other thing I can think of is maybe the trans fluid I put in, I searched on the internet & forums & Ravenol fluid had a few recommendations, so put that in, their web site said it meets/exceeds specifications, also changed the final stage resistor on Saturday, can't see that making any difference though. Anyway thanks for your interest.

Update P0720

Evening all, carried out the transfer box calibration on Tuesday evening, the first run was ok, second run, a bit rough in lo gear, 3rd 4th 5th & 6th runs were fine, made all the difference when back in hi gear, drove to work & back today, drove normally, kick down worked fine, round trip of 120 miles, will use again for work tomorrow, fingers crossed all's well, hopefully it was the transfer box all along, lack of use?
