getting a slight droning noise UPDATE

Hi all 2003 4.4 V8 100k on the clock

Not sure if this has always been here and im just noticing it so now im listening out for it but when driving im randomly getting a slight droning/rumble from what seems like the tyres, its random and no pattern to it. I live in the sticks and the roads are all pretty crap even the bigger A roads and it sounds like when you go from a smooth bit of tarmac to a ruffer bit if you no what i mean. It last a few seconds then stops and nothing but will randomly do it again, I cant feel it just hear it. The car runs 100 percent normal and went through its mot 2 weeks ago with one advisory of slight wear to a rear lower arm rose bush could that be it ? didnt notice the noise before the mot. I just fitted a brand new set of tyres today and noise still seems to be there so not a bad tyre, also if i slip it in to neutral the noise will still appear if that means anything. Its one of those noises that you dont notice until you do then you keep noticing because you're looking for it lol.

Thanks
Paranoid Harry

I know this feeling well, I had a similar noise (thought possible wheel bearing). Changed tyres, straight through the MOT with no advisories & wheel bearings fine ?.

Sat a couple of mates in the car & they couldn't hear anything Big Cry

I've now turned up the radio a notch & wait for something to fail or fall off Thumbs Up

yep im going to do the same, if i take it to a garage they will just say its tyre noise from the crap roads and all terrains. I think we all notice things out of place on our own cars that others dont, pretty sure i wouldnt notice it in another car...

I could be talking rubbish here, but I seem to recall in the early days of the L322 they were fitted with Goodyear Wrangler tyres, which caused road noise when part worn that sounded very much like wheel bearings (and, in fact, were subject to warranty claims in the US, but not here - big surprise) and one of the reasons LR changed OE tyres to Pirelli Scorpion. So, it could be tyre noise, I notice a bit of tyre noise in mine very occasionally that some might think was wheel bearings, but it definitely isn't. Drives:

To be honest, I think this is my problem (like the old Land Rover sound), as I run Pirelli Scorpions. Thumbs Up

I just changed from Scorpions to Grabber AT-3 and didnt stop the noise, does sound like its coming from the tyres though but as its not constant and only last seconds when it happens its hard to pin point it. I have read of people saying similar and it turns out to be the torque converter so fingers crossed its not that, i have found it still does it if i put it in neutral and coast for a while so not sure if that makes a difference..

Mine also comes & goes, Therefore I have put it down to the tyres.

Either that or we're both in for new torque converters Shocked Rolling with laughter

Just to clarify, it was the Goodyear Wranglers that were guilty in the early days. Drives:

With my 04 petrol it was the same paranoia ! you know when something is not right and really know what it is Rolling with laughter I tried all the brake caliper/warped discs.wrong tyres but knew what it was, if you get it early may not be so bad, in the end I had gearbox and TC for c. £ 1500 Thumbs Up
