Oil leak, oil in coolant, 4.4 TDV8

So, I thought I'd pull the pollen filter off and check the back of the engine for leaks as per the advice thread on here, but I didn't quite get that far. I'd noticed an oily/coolant kind of smell when parking the car up, but only having had it for a couple of weeks I've not done enough miles on it to have any idea of how much oil it's using.

There's a whole lot of oil on the underside of the car though. I also noticed there seems to be oil in the coolant, which looks bad.

Obviously the car is under the 12month warranty from the dealer I bought it from, so I have the ability to return it and have it fixed - but I'm after more general opinions on whether I should be considering just returning it and starting the search for another :\

Mine was worse than that when I bought it. Oil cooler replaced and the cooling system flushed about 5 times and it’s still fine nearly 5 years later.

Don’t reject the car yet if it ticks all your other boxes. Most of them suffer from this at some point.

*breathes sigh of relief*

Thanks, that was what I was hoping to read! Everything else about the car I love and it drives great, holds temp perfectly etc, engine sounds fine.

Waiting a response from the dealer at the moment on what to do next!

Orings meaning the ones in the turbo pipe, right?

It’s booked in for the dealer to take a look at tomorrow morning, so fingers crossed they don’t argue too much and agree to replace. I must say, they’ve been helpful and prompt so far.

Crossing everything Smile

Thanks for the feedback!

Well if they don’t fix it, and it causes other issues down the line.... how will that sit in their warranty?

Best they fix it now.... for all parties....

Agree with the above.

I would only add (this seems to be very rare) my EGR needed to be replaced due to it being covered in oil and gave up.

Not sure how this can be checked but depending on how long the oil leak has been there it could be worth looking at. Perhaps a high pressure smoke test could find any small leaks.

To replace the oil cooler gaskets they pretty much have to go down all the way down to the EGR anyway....

Its an expensive job to do later...

Good luck and hope it works out! RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

As has been said, it's a common issue wit the 4.4 TDV8's.

Mine had oil in the coolant too, so once the oil cooler gaskets and O rings were replaced and the cooling system flushed, it's been fine ever since.

a joint has been added to your exhaust crossover pipe so it's been cut at some point too

This is positive to hear, thanks! The long thread on here made me think it was common, but of course, not knowing how long it’s been like that prior to me buying it made me worry a bit.

Thank you for the feedback, I’m feeling more happy about it this morning Smile

Interesting - it’s got a decent amount of service history from a German garage and seems well maintained generally, so this wouldn’t surprise me - the underbody tray is presumably missing too (I didn’t have to remove anything to take the pictures).

See if you can get the dealer to fit the Viton O-rings to the oil pipe fitting rather than replace the pipe just to get O-rings that won't last.

Hmmm, no idea, didn't realise it wasn't standard but you've got me curious now...

I just got back from dropping the car off at the dealer so I can't check, it'll be a mystery for a few days/weeks I guess Smile

I'm guessing maybe it's an aftermarket Tracker, though I admit the very bottom of the car is the least useful place to fit a Tracker and I can't see evidence of any power cable to it...

Good point, will mention that to them! I'm waiting to see how they diagnose it before saying too much, but it's been left with them this morning so hopefully I'll have some feedback soon Smile
