Engine System Fault

This weekend I drove from Kent to Cornwall in my 2008 TDV8 and had set the cruise and set off. All was going well until I came to a hill in Cornwall where the speed limit is 60 but there is a lane to overtake. As I ascended the hill and wasn’t overtaking anything, there was a ‘bong’ and a message appeared saying “Engine System Fault”. I immediately lost power and was able to get over the brow and pull over into a lay-by. I turned off the engine and restarted it. The check control messages was showing OK and the car drove as normal to our destination. However, cruise was no longer working. At the destination I turned off the engine and took out the key. I re-inserted it and started the car and now the cruise function was working again.

I used the car for some local journeys throughout the day and the message never reappeared. Returning to Kent yesterday, shortly after leaving Truro there is a bypass with an incline, as we began our ascent, the Engine System Fault message appeared again. I pulled off the road, turned off, removed the key, re-inserted the key, started up and pressed the check control button which everything was OK and set off again. The car was fine until we came to the hill on the A30 as you come up a long hill just south of Launceston. Again the message appeared and I went through the same procedure as before. The was fine again until we were in the vicinity of Okehampton where there are several hills. On the final one, we got the message again and I repeated the procedure. We were fine again until, due to a diversion we found ourselves on the A3 coming out of Guildford. There is a not noticeable incline on this stretch of road and once again I was forced into a lay-by. The now standard procedure was carried out.

For the remainder of the journey that was made up of motorways, I undertook the following measures:

Not to use cruise control as when a hill appears the car changes down to maintain the 70mph and the message appears.

Stick to 60-65mph where possible.

There no more messages after Guildford. I have search the site for this message and most point towards hairline cracks in the pipes or in the inlet manifold. I don’t have any whistling (something I did have in a BMW 535d that had a cracked exhaust manifold. Other that the inlet manifold, what else could be causing this? I have a 12-month warranty with car that is valid until July next year so I will any repairs done through that.

Thanks,

Steve

Could be the supercharger cooling pump not operating in the correct rotational direction. A search will reveal how to check the wiring. Previous cars:

It was the profile that did for me. My bad, should have read the post more carefully 🤔. Previous cars:

I'm guessing the car needs a little more breath pulling up those hills [know them well from my days in haulage] & when she gasps and there's a split in one of the four donut hoses, that'll give you that message.
When you turn the car off, the system resets itself & away you go, typical scenario of the failed donut hose[s].
Look very carefully as sometimes they can look ok but underneath aren't.

That's my thought anyway. Idea 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Took the car to local garage to have fault codes read and they suggested it is likely to be EGR fault. I wasn’t sure if the EGRs had been changed when I bought the car so I had these added to the warranty. I went to an Indy just after purchase and told me after a visual inspection that it looked like the EGRs had been changed as they looked very shiny. The car is booked in for a diagnostic inspection next Wednesday so I should find out then what is wrong.

The codes that were read were:

P0196-26 Engine oil temperature sensor circuit range/performance - signal rate of change below threshold
P1335-21 Exhaust gas recirculation position sensor minimum stop performance - signal amplitude less than minimum
U0402-67 Invalid data received from transmission control module - signal incorrect after event
P023D-22 Manifold absolute pressure - turbocharger/supercharger boost sensor A correlation - signal amplitude greater than maximum
P1623-00 Immobilizer code word/identification number write failure - no subtype information.

I have also updated my vehicle profile to my current car.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve, make sure you check the turbo hoses thoroughly, especially the one on the right as you look at the engine, they must be removed as they split under the webbing and cannot be seen in situ. Simple to take off, just a jubilee clip, then give them a good squeeze and you’ll see the splits if there. Went twice on mine in 5 years.

And the winner is.....

I took the car to the garage today for a diagnostic test to find out what the fault was. The garage thought it most likely to be the EGR valves and I put forward the chance that the pipes on top of the engine had split. They carried out a smoke test and found out that the driver’s side inlet manifold has a crack in it.

Just waiting now for the garage to contact the warranty company to get the go-ahead for the repair and to source the spare parts. Hopefully, this should all be sorted by next week. In the meantime, I continue to limit speed around the 60-70mph mark on dual-carriageways and motorways.

Well done to whoever suggested the inlet manifold as the culprit!

Quelle surprise! Warranty Wise (endorsed by Quentin Wilson) has declined my claim for the repair because the inlet manifold is not included or covered on my plan (Silver)! The warranty was provided by the dealer who sold me the vehicle and cost him over £1,000. I have looked at my plan and the Gold and Platinum ones above it and none of them mention the inlet manifold or any part of the exhaust system. My plan covers the engine’s moving parts, strangely including the engine block (is that a moving part? I know it moves when the car moves but hadn’t considered it a moving part of the engine). I had specifically asked for EGRs to be added to the plan but didn’t realise I should have asked for every other component not mentioned to be added.....!

Anyway, I have been looking at what the inlet manifold is and have deduced that it is a piece of plastic that is susceptible to cracking on the driver’s (offside) RH manifold and costs around £378-400+ depending on where you buy it. It is also fiddly to replace, taking around 4.5 hours in labour which, in my case, equates to around £325. That’s £700 I could have spent on something else.

I am now under increased pressure to get rid and buy a sensible small car but I am resisting. As I’ve already paid my year’s tax and insurance, I might as well hang on until I have to renew those.

Car is booked in for repair next Friday.

My Pax side inlet manifold was replaced ay a cost of £1600 (inc. labour and VAT). Apparently the injector loom needs replacing as it all comes out.

I have discovered this weekend that if you set cruise to 70mph the car will go up hills and along the flat areas without any engine system fault coming up. Only if you try to power up hills does the message appear. It might also appear when towing something up hill (I haven’t towed anything yet so can’t confirm this). If you are replacing the inlet manifold you also need to buy two EGR gaskets (£25! From Land Rover) as well. Car is due in at garage on Monday late afternoon and should be ready on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Be careful driving it until it's sorted - i've read theories about this sort of leak causing turbo overspeeds and ultimately leading to their much more expensive demise.

But i had exactly the same problem, i repaired mine for a few pounds using sika 291 marine sealant and it's been perfect ever since (~12k miles ago) 2008/58 FFRR 3.6 TDV8 Vogue
