now allowed to buy my first RR L322

we need to replace the aged Volvo, so SWMBO has agreed to let me have a L322 and she can have my D3.
so after searching the forum, i can't find an idiots guide to what to look for when buying.
could you also please advise on what year did they have the adaptive cruise control fitted?
I'll be looking for a high spec Vogue model, what's the difference between the vogue and vogue SE?

many thanks in advance for your help.

The challenge is that there will be lots (or none) of individual options on a Vogue. And even Vogue SE.

If you get an Autobiography you know you start with a good base with nicer quality leather, leather all round. Heated and cooled seats. Adaptive cruise etc. Most would have the auto full beams as well and the 360 cameras.

The Westminster is headline grabbing at first, well it was to me. But actually isn’t that well specified at all. I found the difference in leather quite noticeable.

The ultimate edition is the ultimate but comes with a price tag to match.

A lot of it is down to 'horses for courses'. What is your budget, are you after a 3.6 or 4.4 tdv8, what are your preferences / wish list, what goodies do you want for your vehicle and are you fussed about mileage?
When I was looking to upgrade from my TD6 last year I had a budget in mind, circa £11k, and my wish list was:
MY Year - 2010 'ish, Engine - 4.4 TDV8, Colour - Orkney Grey, Interior - Ivory, Side Steps - a must, Tow Bar, Heated/Cooled Front Seats - Definately, Mileage - Not fussed as the first thing I'd do is preventative maintenance. That gave me the option of either a specced up Vogue or a Vogue SE.
Hunted around, waited a little bit, looked at the ads every day and bagged a 2012 Westminster with everything I wanted, needed a few bits sorting, but had budgeted for them. Cost £11.5k, with 146,000 miles on the clock. I've had it a year now and spent (in total) £1.5k on preventative maintenance and fixing the little niggles. Got a FFRR I absolutely love...and is the envy of everyone who sees it or gets into it!
There's plenty of great advice and help on this forum, just don't rush into a purchase. You'll love it when you get the right one for you! Thumbs Up

That's good advice.
Budget around 10>12k
And taking my time, not in a great rush, and prepared to travel for the right one.
(Did this when buying the D3, drove from Chester to London for the right one)
Having an extra budget for getting full service done, I'll do all the work , even if its been done by the dealer before picking it up, I don't trust garages, been the the auto trade since I left school.
And of course those little jobs you always find when you get it home.

Not sure what engine etc I'm looking for to be honest, that's why I'm asking for advice prior to looking for the right one for me.

Spain 2011 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

It's almost a loaded question as I guess a fair few of us have gone through this thought process and come to a conclusion! Smile

For me, I decided I wanted a 2010 or newer as it has the updated dash and I felt like it's still modern and will age better. I ended up with the TDV8 4.4 as it seemed to be the most reliable of the engines.

I had a shortlist of options I decided on; surround cameras, etc, all personal choice, but I felt it was easier to draw up a list of "must haves", "should haves" and "don't cares", which made it easier to judge each advert/car that came up.

I tried to stick to the list too, so I wasn't impulsive.

For me, it was...

Must have...
TDV8 4.4
Less than 100k miles
Surround cameras
Logic7 or better
Black leather and black or grey exterior

Should have
Tow bar
Logic 7 HD
DualView Screen

Don't wants
Rear fitted DVD screens
Light coloured interior

Once I'd got to that list it seemed to make it easier to choose one! I really found it helpful spending time reading the threads on this forum and reading about the various options, it helped me a lot to understand what's available and what people really valued.

4.4 is great but has a DPF so ensure you're driving habits will match the requirements of a DPF equipped car i.e. it will need regular runs and not a town plodder. 3.6 don't have a DPF and can be EGR blanked. Both can be remapped by Alive or Bell to around mid 300 bhp. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
New Defender D300 90 on order so "Rory" will be going to a new home....!
1974 Series 3 Lightweight = "Millie"

SE is basically a discounted options bundle. It's possible to spec up a Vogue to have everything on an SE has, but makes searching a little harder as you have to read the details. The exact differences vary a bit by year - so once you've narrowed it down a bit someone may be able to provide specifics.

One assumes you're after a diesel & not a petrol?
Your budget would get a nice 4.4 TDV8 with 90k-125k miles on her I would think.
Low £10k would get a pukka low miles 3.6 TDV8 but on a personal note, I would try for a 4.4 TDV8 much better all round.
Rust, believe it or not, is a problem even on 2010-2012 models, so look carefully.
The Wicki will tell you everything you need to know, common issues are oil cooler leaks [one off fix] heated seats play up.
Just make sure your wallet is stacked with notes & you'll be fine.
Best thing you've down so far........is............ you've joined this forum, a wealth of knowledge, a dash of humour & that's all you need! Very Happy 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

D

This is what ended my L322 search, most of the 2010-2012's I viewed has worst rust than my 2007 which was in great shape!

The tailgate, rear sills and rear arches seemed to be especially bad on the later models that we viewed, not sure if we were just unlucky - But good cars were up at 20k this time last year!

That being said I would love a L322 again one day, great cars Thumbs Up Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

If you're not in a burning hurry, I think the best advice would be to keep an eye on this forum and wait for a member's car to come up that matches your requirements. There are some Full Fats in fantastic condition with great history that come up for sale on here from time to time. 2004 L322 4.4 V8 Vogue Bonatti Grey

WOW many thanks all, some great advice, and that brochure is brilliant.
i'm in no great hurry, and was thinking early spring when the snow prices fall a bit.
i'm used to having to have deep pockets as i've owned/own discoverys, so yes i understand LR vehicles are a little heavy on costs. but as i'll be doing 99% of all jobs on it myself this reduces the outgoings quite a bit.

as i've said i'm prepared to take my time and look around for the right one, and travel if needed.
i've now got a lot to read up on and make my list of must haves etc, which is a really good idea.

the rust issue is a little worrying, but if i find a good one and get in there quick with waxoil etc hopefully won't become a big problem.
