Evening,

A typical subject from looking at search so checked the majority of items I read about that seemed obvious but wanted to ask a couple of points.

The wife was driving a couple of days ago and got restricted performance so pulled over, turned off and on again and problem solved (I mean problem hidden lol)

It happened again today but did not go out but also she said there was no lack of performance (strange)

I have gone out tonight and checked the top intercooler pipes (taken off and fully checked) along with checking the top strut cables (seem ok) and also checked for obvious soot deposits and could see nothing obvious.

I have taken the car out and it has no messages and runs as normal but the yellow engine light remains on, which it has never done before.

I do have the car booked for a full service in 3 weeks and after the next 2-3 days it does not need to be used really but does anyone think using it still is an issue or any suggestions on what I can check as the fact it does not have a lack of performance is confusing my small brain

Went back out again and now the yellow engine light is off and still runs ok so will try to have another look tomorrow night to see if I can get to the bottom of it

Right, I am only updating when I know more to make sure it clear what’s going on and help people in the future.

I remembered as the weekend I used low range and had a fiddle with the different special set ups as I like to ensure that low range is used to keep it all working (irony right there)

The restricted performance message can 100% be made to come on by turning the special programs knob from normal to anything else. It’s not related to suspension height or going from low to high ratio as these can cycle all the time with no affect to error messages.

As soon as you rotate from normal on the knob it hits the restricted performance message. Also after driving off the engine/gearbox yellow warning light is on but still no difference in performance or gear change when driving.

Any thoughts on what could be affecting that for me to look at tonight, does the car use certain sensors in special modes that could be faulty that I can check by in plugging or linking out?

Also a slight update (they come thick and fast) my misses drove it and decide to just call the AA and they popped out and hooked it all up and with a few mins the guy was 100% adamant it’s was an EGR valve from what he could see / diagnose and he was LR fanatic so was really confident.

I am not shocked as it has done limited mileage all it’s life (50k in 10 years) so coking up of these is not a shock and had budgeted to do them anyway but now I can do them on warranty.

I will post the conclusion once it’s confirmed by my independent etc but it has shown me I need a code reader!!!!!

If it is the EGR then simply blank it off on the 3.6. Loads of information on here on kits to fit, digital delete and then an optional remap afterwards to treat it

Afternoon Dr Rob,

I am way out West Midlands but seem to have located a great Indy with a very knowledgeable chap at the helm.

I would blank them off for sure ordinarily but as it is under warranty I will get some shiny ones put in and then make a decision on a blank / remap.

Thanks for the info on Ian sounds like a chap I will get to know owning one of these RR’s

The guys I am using is James at JMW 4X4LTD and seems to really know his stuff from recommendations I have had from local guys.

Been considering a Bell remap actually but just the gearbox strength has prevented me looking more seriously, but the fact there are many many done suggests it’s not an actual issue.

Well Dr Rob the warranty company don’t list EGR valves so that means they are not covered so by default it means I will be asking the garage what they can do as opposed to just replacing them

I assume if one has failed I would need to get it removed and examined incase it has failed in a way not appropriate for an engine or is it as simple as blanking and ignoring?

Yes my wife did but the guy was apparently a LR fan so did some other looking around but the garage I dropped it to telly know their stuff so I will await their diagnosis anyway.

The report AA guy gave was as follows:-


Patrol found the following fault code/s:System : Engine control - 7M0 / Diesel CR/EDC SID 203 Status :U0402 - CAN message, transm. control unit. Error Message : Not all events stored. Error sporadic. Status :P0489 - Exhaust gas recirculation control A. Error Message : Malfunction. Error sporadic.Egr valve faulty needs garage attention needs to go straight to garage Engine Oil Level Ok. Coolant Level Ok.

I just wanted to conclude the above as it always helps to know the end of the story.

So it was confirm one of the EGR valves had failed but not obviously fallen apart and entered anywhere it should not.

The warranty company exclude the valves from cover so we opted for blanking them, mapping them out and had a full service done to boot.

Car now runs very smooth and it’s hard to compare as it’s been a while but going by the dash reading it is slightly better on MPG and appears to run smoother but that could be placebo affect as excited to get it back lol.
