BATTERY DISCONNECTION

Going to change the starter motor on my 02 TD6 this weekend but.... having read the owners handbook it says there is a pyrotechnical charge in the battery poitive side and not to touch ! WTF ??? Surely I can disconnect and remove my own battery ? Confused
