Insurance

I just got my next year from eSure and it had gone up from £333 to £540 (made me sit up and take notice) so I thought I might have a quick look around. After consulting my family they suggested using a Cashback site and seeing what the big comparison sites could do. So having spent a few hours on it I found Darwin Insurance (Direct Line subsidary) via Money Supermarket for £389 less £37 cash back via Top Cashback. I'm afraid my basics are pretty boring so this won't work for everyone.
Old
Retired
Less than 9000 miles SDP only (no commuting or business)
On my Drive
If I was desperate I could drive the wifes car (she won't under any circumstances drive mine).
And of course being old and boring I haven't got any convictions or made any claims
I did protect my no claims, that cost me 20quid.

I have cancelled my auto renewal with eSure although when I rang they managed to magic another £90 off Shocked so much for being a loyal customer.

Any other suggestions? Geoff

Thanks Stan,

I haven't actually pulled the trigger yet, a bit more investigating to do.

Interestingly when I rang eSure they said that due to the inclement weather calls may take longer than normal to be answered, makes a change from blaming Covid. One day they might get round to saying because we are mean we don't employ sufficient staff to answer your calls promptly - thats of course after I had pressed a lot of buttons to get through their automated systems. When I did speak to someone they asked me all the questions I had just answered again - in the interest of security of course. Geoff

Similar situation to you went to RAC @£192. Previously with SaGa who wanted £230 or £ about £270 to fix for three years.

RAC allows me to drive other cars ( provided they are insured separately) on a third party basis which comes in handy as I occasionally drive an elderly next door neighbour and give his car a run. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

It's so variable with insurance companies and the quote you receive will depend entirely on whether you "fit" into one of their pre-defined actuarial risk "boxes". This is why people are often advised to amend details like their job title to see if they get a better quote. Bizarrely last year when I was doing our renewals my wife's quote went up because she had given up work. Go figure!

And of course, just to make things interesting, different insurers have different "boxes" which is why you have to shop around. In my recent experience it seems there is now less variation linked to annual mileage than there used to be so changing from 12k to 6k during covid made zip difference when I renewed last year. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

As for job titles ( Mine being marine engineer ), one outfit wanted to almost double my premium once they found out I worked at sea, not onshore. So over the phone I told them the house was not empty when I was away, and that my car was locked, and parked in my garage that also has an alarm system, for more than half of the year, then asked them how this increases the risks - no answer was given, so told them to Censored

All; thanks for the thread above, I managed to lop 30% off my initial quotes due to your advice. I eventually went with DirectLine’s Comp+ which came in at £504 for me.

WRT comments above about Job title and timings etc, take a read of Martin Lewis’s money saving expert site. He reckons around 20 days before your renewal is due will yield the best price and jiggling job descriptions ( legally) also makes a diffence. The link is here ( I’m not affiliated in anyway )

Anyone know if there are specialist insurers for Range Rover enthusiasts?

Might be a market opportunity if there aren’t TDV8 4.4 2012

I check CompareTheMarket, etc 23 days before my renewal.

First time I did it, managed to half the cost.

Since then it's always got me a better deal. What do I put here then?

Mine went up from 530£ to 650. AA

Went on to a comparison site. £350.00 Shocked

Whoops, Then added windscreen cover £520.00

Four offers at that level, The AA cover all glass , not sure about the others. Still checking. Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

Update; at the last stage of the process, just before I was due to pay, DirectLine informed me that a Thatcham Cat 7s tracker was a prerequisite. This was going to cost around £250 to install and £10 per month subscription. So I went back to Darwin Insurance who offered the same level of cover with no tracker for £10 less.

It came in at £490 all told including legal cover and extra hire car benefits. TDV8 4.4 2012

DirectLine have always insisted on some form of tracker. They still seem to be one of the very few who do. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
