I was about to buy this car but I am very surprised with this noise.
Can anyone tell me if this is normal on a 5.0 sc engine?

Not meant to sound like that afaik.

The 2 issues are possibly timing chain guides, the steel tensioning pin wears on the aluminium guide and eventually allows the chain to lose tension.

The other possible issue is the supercharger snout linkage. Either of these is fixable but the guides is not a cheap job. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Just run away from that car and forget about it. Unless you are handy with a spanner and perhaps only buy it for 2,000€ and hope you are lucky, otherwise run.

That sounds like a diesel. I've not convinced it is the guides as if they sound that bad then surely the timing is off as well. A car like that is in good working order not worth much more than about £12K, if you aren't handy with a spanner then an issue like that could easily make it uneconomical to repair and rapidly spend half that again to get it into a known good state.

Just for fun, what does the seller say about that? They all sound like that? The engine is cold?

He did not know.

What is more embarassing is that the LR dealer said that this engine (5.0 SC) "often make that kind of noise".
They told me the car came for service and there was a light on the dashboard.
They replaced the plugs and the "coils" (not sure about the translation), and the light went away.

Right now I have said I still would be interested in the car if they make that noise go away and explain what work they did on it to make it right again (timing belt or supercharger remplacement, ...)

What surprised me is that during the road test, the power was there and nothing was wrong.
It is when I did the outside inspection that I notice the sound.

Find another one. That's trouble & the dealer is just trying to get rid of it.

That really doesn't sound good.

I had the chains and supercharger coupler replaced on mine, but neither sounded anything like that .

I'm quite picky, so I probably replaced mine well ahead of when some people would have, but still, that really rough sounding.

If they can fix it (and explain what it was), then ok, but otherwise I would leave it well alone.

Is it expensive to fix it?

I have told them I will be interested in buying the car if they fix the noise before.
Even so, I hope the engine did not get any damage from using it like this.

The seller finally agreed to change the supercharger before the sale.
So I am interested again.

Do not leave a deposit until you have heard it when fixed, then get a full independent examination done on it and a decent warrantee, If you don't do the work yourself these can be a money pit...

Having said that the 5.0 S/C is apparently the most reliable L322 ever made (but that's not a massive achievement ) Pete

as said above, don't pay a deposit until you know it's fixed. (or ensure that any deposit you pay is fully returnable if you're not happy)

If you want to try to get some confidence that the noise is coming from the supercharger, you could isolate the supercharger by running it (very briefly) with the supercharger drive belt removed. If it's bearing or coupler noises from the charger, then these would pretty much disappear.

This method was used to isolate the noise coming from the supercharger snout coupler on mine. The garage would be able to do this quite quickly before undertaking a 5000euro repair.
