Brakes broken..... brace wallet....

Had to brake hard when someone pulled out on a dual carriageway.... very hard..... then pedal didn’t feel right... carried on moving after car had stopped... brakes seemed to work. Not safe to drive really. AA came out and said a brake pipe looked to have split. That was 21st Dec... garage couldnt get it in until 6th Jan.

So yesterday it went for a holiday....

Garage replaced front to rear pipes and the flexis and thought I could fetch it today maybe.

Just had a call to say they can’t get it to bleed properly and it will need a new master cylinder... might be ready tomorrow.

Might not be able to manage to fetch it as heavy snow forecast Rolling Eyes

What a pain in the Censored !!
Glad they did not fail completely when you needed them and you are ok.
i had to do some very heavy breaking the other day, i was surprised at just how quick they will come to a stop, i had to peel my eyeballs off the screen!! and as the ABS did not cut in i assume i could have hit the pedal harder still. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Oh my ABS was in.... and EBA noticed I’d come off the accelerator quick and had already primed the brakes. The Brembo 6 pots are good. Pity it stressed other bits that were either worn or aged.....

Couldn’t fault the AA, even recovered it from my house even though I don’t have home start..... as the issue actually started away from home.....

I’m wondering if the fault was actually the master cylinder seals or something, rather than the pipes. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Split hose would leave oil all over the place in my limited experience i would have gone for master cylinder.
but even though it is an expense everyone can do without at least when it comes back you will have piece of mind it is all tip top for the next time you have the throw the anchors out Thumbs Up 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

How often has your brake fluid been changed..? It is a classic burst pipe, the hole will be very small, the fluid loss small and the brakes will work until you have lost a lot of fluid..

Under normal use the piston in the master cylinder only travels a short distance, when bleeding, the piston has to complete it's full travel, if you have old brake fluid with some moisture in then the piston or bore will have some minute rust particles on them, these will now be dragged past the seals and the master cylinder will start to leak... It's a fairly common issue..

I take it they do know they have to tell fatty that she is having her fluid bled via diagnostics..?? Pete

The fluid has only ever been changed as part of normal servicing as far as I know. I’ve not had it done separately.

The techy on the phone said that to me. I never brake hard normally, don’t like brake dust on my alloys.....

I didn’t mention that, but assume they know.... will see if they have any further trouble tomorrow.

Thanks Pete.

Just picked it up. Pedal is softer than it was before, maybe that’s normal with new master cylinder.... no idea.

Car constantly saying bonnet open.... went back.... they said I needed a new switch or to short it out.... got home, and of course I couldn’t lock it as it thought the bonnet was still open. Then I figured they probably leant on it when doing the cylinder.... bent the switch bracket up a bit and it’s all working again.

They have charged me for 3 wheel nuts for some reason.... will be ringing them tomorrow.

Need to put my stuff back in it tomorrow and give the interior a good wipe down.

Will keep an eye on it.... though can’t really go out driving much...

If you pump the pedal a few times and it gets harder then they probably haven't bled it properly....!

As a matter of interest how much was the master cylinder,,?.. Pete

A Trap

Wheel nuts will probably have ‘blown’ the outer stainless beauty cap... very common.

Master cylinders are common when you have a leak from hose or pipe failures etc, can cause the master cylinder piston seals flipping over or dirt/corrosion ripping the seals, either way it’s common.

If pedal is really soft, try some hard braking that kicks the ABS on, this may release any trapped air or better still ask if the specialist activated the ABS with the diagnostic tool which is part of the bleeding process.

Master cylinder was £170.46 plus VAT..... part number seems right LR012901.

Pedal def isn’t right I don’t think. Moves more before the brakes come on. Didn’t try much with it.

It was 8 wheel nuts at £3 when I read the invoice again correctly, and I know I had a few with issues, so I’m not too worried about that now. Looks like they replaced them on both rear wheels.

I saw the ABS bleed procedure in the workshop manual.... I just trusted they knew what they were doing.

Cheers

The Pedal should be firm but you know that. Perhaps some road-tested it and had not driven a RR before? 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current
